At least Ragnarok (while overly silly for its own tone) was still a pretty hilarious movie. The humor in this movie felt off, like it's the typical forced humor MCU bullshit we've seen a bajillion times but sometimes it never landed and other times it was really cringe.

With that said, I like that the tone for this movie was consistent (pretty light toned and I did love the rock n roll 80's vibe bursting throughout the film) with a great message about love and I thought Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman were fantastic. I was very surprised they actually did kill off Jane Foster, I really thought they were going to push her to be the next Thor.

6.5/10 for me, but yeah it really seems like a lot of the Phase 4 films are all build up to something but not even I can see the end goal in mind other than Kang the Conqueror that will eventually show up in Antman.

Jane does come back as a Valkyrie in the comics afaik so she may not be entirely gone. But most likely is.

I adored it. Most of my audience seemed to too

I knew they were going to go the cancer angle, but I really thought it would just be a background thing in this movie and then explore it more or have her die in the next one.

And yeah the amount of chemistry Portman and Hemsworth had in this movie and how fun she was in a decent Thor movie really does make it kinda suck that she's gone or didn't have more of a good part in the past.

I liked it. The humor wasn't really similar to other mcu movies, it more leaned into weird goofy 80s style humor.

I think the humor could be obnoxious on rewatches but we will see. The actual plot was above average for MCU. The villain was one of the best in the series.

Yeah, I appreciate on one hand that they didn't go the safe route, but on the other hand I really like Jane Foster this time around vs. when she was in Thor 1 and 2. I felt they could've done soo much more with her, especially the plot point of her suffering from cancer, they could've done more character development regarding it and what not. I think this time around I felt that Portman and Hemsworth had much better chemistry and wish I could see more of it in later films.

Some of the humor was way too damn forced and dragged on like the part with Heimdals son arguing with Thor over his nickname

the screaming goats were occasionally funny, felt like they used them maybe 3 times too many

the jealous Stormbreaker gag was downright hilarious though

I just came out from seeing it. It was pretty entertaining but as usual it would have been better with about a third less comedy moments keeping some scenes from fully landing.

I read an interview or something in which Portman and Hemsworth said they didnt know what Thor will return meant because neither of them has been offered a contract for a new movie or something like that. They didnt know about that phrase and looked at each other and said Is it you? I dont know how serious they were, though.

The doctor in Asgard and Gorr himself kind of explained it. While Mjolnir was giving her energy and stamina, it was actually sapping her body of the ability to fight through the cancer. Thor seems convinced that she would be okay if she stopped transforming and underwent treatment there. But that could have just been him being overly hopeful.

Ehhh, I kind of don't mind it.

Maybe if she got treatment earlier from Wakanda or Asgard it would have been okay, but she didn't. At that time she didn't have any major connections to them either. She didn't know anyone that lived there since Thor was off doing his thing, as was Sif. Darcy told her to "play the space viking card," i.e go to Asgard, but she didn't want to stop working to do it. I'm sure that some species out there may have been able to cure her but by the time she told Thor it was too late. She was like, straight up on the verge of death already.

Oh dang, so it was only a one time deal. No wonder they went with the direction they did. I personally don't see how much more Hemsworth can play as Thor though. Keeping a body that maintained for a role like that is fucking difficult.

That's actually good news then. I honestly think he's probably having one of the most fun in his role. I remember reading interviews with RDJ and Evans that they wanted out of the MCU game for awhile now, but Disney kept throwing money at them until Endgame.

Yeah in a recent interview I saw he said he was kinda eh after Thor 2 but it seems like Ragnarok and the direction the character's gone since then has really rekindled his love for it.

Also helps that they film the Thor movies in Australia now IIRC so he's close to home.

Yeah, I remember reading Hemsworth was tired of the role around Thor 2, but then Ragnarok made it so much more fun that he found a new love for playing the character.

I kinda had a wish that they'd tap Hemsworth to voice Thor in God of War, but with a different take on his voice using an American accent.

They go Kevin Sorbo to voice Hercules in God of War 3, and some of the Disney VAs from Hercules in so it would be funny.

Fun little bit of storytelling I didn't catch until later.

Jane: "How long has it been? 3, four years?"

Thor: "Eight years," plus whatever extra months, days, etc.

Difference: About 5 years

She got snapped.

I honestly thought the whole black+white sequence on that small planet was by far the best part of the movie and showed just how terrifyingly powerful Gorr *could* potentially be.

Then of course he had like, 5 minutes more screentime after that.
