So what happens next

He's resigning as party leader but not as Prime Minister (yet).

Over the summer the members of the Conservative Party will vote for a new leader, and that person will take over from Boris as PM.

Technically a General Election isn't due for another two years, so whoever the Tories choose has at least that long in the job, but usually a PM who comes to power this way calls a GE sooner so that they can deflect the inevitable "the public didn't vote for you" backlash (even though our whole election system is based around us not voting for PM, but I digress). I doubt they'll call an Election straight away, because they'll want time for the Tories in general to distance themselves from the Johnson stink in the eyes of the public, but I'd guess that by next Autumn we'll have a GE.

I'm not sure I understand how you can be prime minister and not the head of your party.

Like, can the parties with majority just appoint anyone they feel like as prime minister?

If so they should appoint David Mitchell.

Basically. Whoever leads the party that won, is PM. And they can change who is leading without any input from the public.

The party can elect any MP (or peer, I believe) as their leader. The leader of the party with the majority of seats in Parliament is made Prime Minister (worth noting that the public doesn't vote for the PM, we vote for our local MP). If there's no leader of the party (as will be the case when Johnson steps down later) the current PM will continue in an interim capacity until the party choose a new leader, who then takes over.

For real. The instant this broke, the Russian anthem broke across the UK and we dragged any Ukranians we could find into the street.

Fucking for real. Why do people think this will change how we support them? It'd be political suicide.

I mean, Boris is likely in Putin's pocket and was likely forced by his cabinet to send aid to Ukraine. Boris spent the first week of the war doing everything he could to minimize the UK's sanctions on Russia while at the same time blustering about how harsh the sanctions were.

As an American, I'm still wrapping my head around the fact that a modern high-ranking conservative politician actually had the barest-minimum dignity and foresight to voluntarily resign. It's a concept that's practically unfathomable to me in this day and age.
