I do know about the last dogfight in Europe during WWII.

Two Americans in an L4 Grasshopper (which was basically a Piper Cub trainer) spotted a German Fi-156 Storch spotter plane. Now the Grasshopper has a top speed of 76 knots and no armament, and the Storch a max speed of 95 knots and carried a single 7.92mm machine gun. The Americans managed to surprise the German plane flying at low altitude. They pulled out their .45 pistols, opened the cockpit door, and opened fire. The Storch was forced down and the Americans landed nearby and captured the Germans.

You could say that the first person who died in WWI was Archduke Franz Ferdinand. His assassination led to Austria-Hungary declaring war against Serbia, which triggered the allies on both sides declaring war against each other.

Who got to pick who was front lines in old school wars where they'd like up in rectangles and just fire at eachother?

I feel like the front line soldiers in these formations...didn't live very long.

Being one of the ones who die after peace is already declared, but the news hasn't made it to every front, so you die in a battle technically fought after the war is already over.

It's happened at least a few times. And got at least one US President elected.

It would depend on how you define "war", but it would have been someone post-Agricultural Revolution. Because you had to establish the concept of property and wealth before you can have political structures and specialized workers, and you need both of those concepts before you can really establish anything resembling a military.

If you define war as just soldiers fighting other people, you probably get your first victim shortly after agriculture starts, as the first settled tribes start using force against their unmilitarized neighbors (but that's more just raids). But if you define war as being combat between two military forces, you might be looking towards Mesopotamia around the time of the Sumerians.

It used to be a pounded into people's heads that it was a great honor to be the first to fight and die on the front lines and soldiers would clamor for it, or be judged cowards.

Today, we are wusses scared of death.
