Why do they not have this kinda energy when it really matters?

Ripping this guy out of his car for asking why he got pulled over really is keeping the streets safe...

Police do nothing useful. They pull people over and ticket them for speeding - to siphon money from the middle-class and poor to the city - but when they are truly needed like in Uvalde they sit on their ass then lie and hide the truth.

Because the police harass people of color all the time with no good reason and this is literally what was going on.

You could tell when the officer said "your license is PROBABLY SUSPENDED!!!"

oh

how did the officer determine this?

Copy and pasted from a comment in that thread:

This is what happens when you DONT know your rights. The Supreme Court has already ruled that during a traffic stop you HAVE TO provide your license. They have also already ruled that cops do NOT need to explain why they pulled you over. The only time they need to explain reasonable suspicion or probable cause is in court to a judge. Knowing what you are required to do when interacting with cops is just as important as knowing your rights.

Now that being said the cops could have just said go ahead and google these things on your phone then I'm going to ask you to comply 1 more time. That would have de-escalated the situation rather than just resorting to physical force all the time.

Edit: I would like to clarify because some people think I'm siding with the cop. I think the cop is an asshole who shouldn't have done what he did. But I also do not believe it's victim blaming to say the driver of the vehicle should educate himself on what he is required to do by law not just his rights. It is important to know both so for instance you don't get ripped out of your car by some asshole cop on a power trip.

To be treated like a human being and preserve your dignity. I wouldn't go for some random adult pulling me over and asking shit - why should I go for a cop, who is just a random adult?

Go fucking stop some crime or get a donut or something.

That, I can agree with. If it were me I would just show my ID and move on with my life.

But I'm never going to be one to be like "just comply!" when you are being harangued and accosted. Even if questioning is just gonna make your life more annoying - you are still a human being and have a right to do so.

And no, thats why I copy and pasted the whole post. I completely side with that guy. The officer was a powertriping douche who needs better deescalation training. But that still doesnt change what the law is.

Sadly yeah. I don't know what became of it, but last year the ACLU filed a complaint about TPD with the DOJ. This traffic stop was one of the cases they referenced.

And one example they gave was how differently it was handled when a white guy wasn't cooperative with the police. They let him go without incident.

And here's the ACLU article, for reference: https://www.aclu.org/press-releases/aclu-michigan-files-complaint-us-department-justice-urging-federal-agency-investigate

Is there a request for id without the stop?

Thus if the stop is unjustified.....then anything that exists from it....
Is also unjustified....

You are trying to justify the cop for being a cop

1. Cop waaaay overreacted, should have just told the dude why he pulled him over, and shouldn't have smashed his window for a minor traffic offense

2. When he said "your license is probably suspended" I doubt he was just speculating. I'm guessing he ran the vehicle's plate, and its was registered to someone whose license was suspended and matched the general description of the driver. Hence why he needed an ID to confirm if the driver was the registered owner and was in fact suspended.

But because of that and the extreme likelihood they will abuse you - minority or not, I do sometimes feel it is just best to comply rather than risk them murdering you. Not like you can just bring it to a station to show them later like in my country.

Ok so when this goes to court what will the cops reason for pulling him over finally be? I'm pretty sure by law they need a valid reason to pull you over. It can't be "He wouldn't show me is ID and resisted arrest" because that happened after he was pulled over

No it is not. As TC already said if the stop is wrong then you can not ask for ID. There must be reasonable suspicion of a crime.
