Also completely traumatized pet night(and well, week because people suck).

Enjoy your day off(I'm working though, where appropriately the first thing I will often do is remind myself of my best escape routes in the event of a mass shooting).

This is probably the 1st July 4th I've actually had off

Also an Indian friend from high school posted did celebrating Independence Day less as pro-America and more as anti-British colonialism and that feels a little better

I lived in an actual third world country for 2 years. People who act like they would prefer to live there infuriate me. I didn't have air conditioning in 95 degree heat 9 months of the year but America is worse sure.

Like don't get me wrong, the country is headed in the wrong direction and we are in serious trouble but the I wish I lived in Sub-Saharan Africa leftists just ooze privilege

Technically this happened to me at one point too but that's more of a landlord issue.

Which I guess...says it's own thing.

Third world has always been a laughable term thats effectively just cold war propaganda that outstayed its welcome. Ireland, for instance, is a third world country according to the original definition. So lets say you use developing country instead, which is still flawed because it assumes that trending towards wealth is certain (just look at Turkey for proof that that isnt the case, that was a mid-level European economy that straight up went backwards) but is better than third world. This STILL doesnt work because it is built on the false assumption that capitalism and economic growth lead to social progression. For instance, China has rapidly expanded its economy but only grown more authoritarian, Saudi Arabia is a very rich country but crushingly oppressive, and the US economy is trundling along as it slides into widespread violence and fascism. You cant solve every social ill with a good economy. It also ignores the class factor - I know a lot of people from sub-saharan Africa (another flawed and politically-loaded term but I dont have time for that one) who would much rather live there then America because theyre well off and much less likely to be killed. Obviously youd rather be poor in America than many of these countries, but Americas inequality is so bad youd much rather be poor in many countries across the world than in America.

Effectively, having air conditioning wont help you in the face of serious civil violence, also for the poorest America isnt the worst place to live, but its below a lot of other places.

Its a lot more than 10%. The US is one of the most unequal countries on the planet. Thats another issue, the US is a wealthy country, but for tens of millions (if not more) it isnt. The USs poverty rate is insane for a country that wealthy.

Air conditioning is a really weird sticking point because thats also a cultural thing. They are rare in Europe, even warm areas, yet I dont see you arguing that it is proof of Europe being bad. Indeed you can get them people just dont.

america is pretty damn good, even taking into consideration all of the terrible things it has done. people forget that countries in general are awful

it's bad that in some ways we've been sliding for the past few terms. we've been sliding relative to the world for longer than that. we're probably top 30 by now instead of top 10. whether that means we suck or not is up to the individual!

progressives get dinged a lot on patriotism, but i don't think most of them should. caring about your country and wanting it to improve is deeply patriotic.

it's very tempting to imagine a version of the country where gerrymandering is solved and some of those tiny red states are merged, or everybody learns empathy and gains 15 IQ points. but comparing ourselves to a platonic ideal is a recipe for depression

America is like 30th. If everyone could acknowledge that with their ego for America is the best maybe America would be top 15 instead tbh.
