About weapon crafting

Just curious. Something about weapon crafting just gives me a negative reaction, so I am wondering if others have the same reaction.

Depends on if it will give me the best weapons or not. If I can find better stuff than I can make, I don't bother.

Itll be a tedious process that you get tired of after a few hours or, even worse, you find other weapons around the world are much more powerful.

Terrible in games like Dark Cloud where you could literally path out of the best weapon in the game hours before you were aware of its existence.

depends entirely on the game. I have yet to play anything where it was superfluous, even though I see that brought up as a common trend, nowadays.

Especially when the Weapon Durability system is very unrealistic like "Zelda: Breath of the Wild"

That had a Durability system designed to force you to change weapons all the time.

As awful as the game was, the weapon crafting in Dead Space 3 had some funny things you could do with it. Most of the time weapon crafting is shit, but it's also my 2nd favorite thing in Monster Hunter which I play a lot so I guess it depends on the game.

I mostly only like the Dragon Quest method, though even that changes a bit between games. Let us be able to find or buy super strong weapons after a time, and leave the most powerful bonus weapons as craft-only, but dont make it tedious to craft them. 8 did that well imo, 9 didnt really, 11 Im not really remembering.

11's was 8's but instant and way easier to deal with imo outside of the minigame which took a bit to learn

and then there's the whole being able to buy components in the fun-size forge menu

I dont remember liking 11s, but I also might not have known you could buy components from the menu, so thats probably a good part of it. Though Im not sure if anything changed between base 11 and the newer version.

then played the entire game on switch XI-S in less than a month

then on my slim ps4 played XI-S again

it depends

if the crafting comes naturally to the game and isn't like the omega giga broken weapons that's fine. Like Tales of Symphonia I guess. None of the crafts were OP, but you never HAD to craft, it was more of like a "hey if you happened to get this enjoy the boost!"

but later games in the series like Arise where it's like "hope you farmed 80 of these uncommon drops while you were in that one dungeon or else you can't get all these upgrades because all gear is tied to crafting!" is absolute dog shit

I liked the way it was done in Final Fantasy 9. Simple and to the point. If you had the materials, you could craft the item. There was no durability on items, and each crafted item could be found in the wild later in the game if you didn't feel like crafting.

That was one of reasons I couldn't get into Breath of the Wild. I'm sure its an amazing game, but between that and the audio I just couldn't get into it. One example is I can't stand the chest opening sound in BOTW. I wish it sounded more like OOTs chest opening sound.

i'm kind of annoyed by Destiny 2's weapon crafting now.

it used to be you would just farm for the god roll weapon.

now you farm for deepsight modded weapons until you get one that you can extract the base pattern from, then you craft that (grinding materials as necessary), then use it until it's leveled up far enough to the point where you can put on the enhanced godroll perks.

i'd rather just farm for the god roll

I love it in Atelier.

You can craft a decent weapon that will easily carry you through the bonus boss of the game with just a little game knowledge.

OR you can follow a maxing guide and make a set of god slaying gear that will absolutely steamroll anything you come across.

I'm not a fan of it. Designers almost never implement it properly becuase they dont feel like balancing the game around it so it'll be both worthwhile and not break the pacing much.

So usually it becomes a useless feature until endgame because none of the items are either worth crafting, or worth the time sink when they won't stay relavant for long.

The only exceptions are game centered around alchemy/crafting. But outside those, the only one I played that came close to doing it well was DQ8.

Indifferent. It's either fun and useful or completely pointless, and I won't know how it's implemented until I actually play it.

I actually enjoyed the breath of the wild durability system more than in most games because it made you actually think strategically about the weapons you were going to use. Unlike most games with weapon durability where you just find a weapon you like and stick with it for the whole game, but have to find a blacksmith or something to repair it every so often.
