Thought she was gonna be the sidekick with the annoying voice, they're not making her... the generic love interest are they.

Still shaking my head that jessica henwick went with matrix 4 instead of this, this should have been her movie.

Movie looked mid in general, so I didn't even bother to see it.

It's actually a pretty good movie, annoying as Awkwafina's voice is, it did not in fact ruin the movie for me.

It was okay. Better than their first attempt with Iron Fist to make more eastern inspired mysticism

Agreed, the whole movie was pretty "meh" to me but the ending especially didn't really make...any sense.

I had hoped Donnie Yen would be in this, it's not quite the asian reunion movie I would have hoped for, only michelle yeoh I saw.

I really liked the fight choreography. I mean it's expected to be good considering the setting, they should have hong kong level choreography and be among the best rather than the more western style fights of quick cuts/shaky cam editing.

The first act was decent, then it was just contrived and then the final act was just the most generic Marvel borefest.

I know people didn't like Eternals, but I feel like they at least tried something different with that. Shang Chi, and to an even worse extent Black Widow, had some really good ideas at the start but were just the most paint-by-numbers films in the end. No inspiration at all.

I liked it overall, but the final fight being random CGI creature 1 vs random CGI creature 2 instead of, say, Shang Chi vs his dad, was a letdown

What was the point of the movie? To have a Chinese superhero with martial arts? To have a movie where the hero gets powers only at the end?

M-She-U, Shang Chi was never the main character in his own movie. It was his sister who learned assassination techniques just by watching Shang Chi and the other Mandarin Clan training. Fled from his father but still somehow managed to raise a fucking martial arts tournament just few years prior.

Act 1 is dope. Then it kinda gets samey as an MCU movie.

But Awkwafina is awesome.

Was that... the incredible hulk's abomination? Wasn't he in a prison on the raft or? Where did we land on that.

And why was Wong fighting him in an underground ring, isn't Wong one of "the good guys" and above wasting time in an underground fighting ring when the sorcerer supremes are all about being on duty 24/7 guarding the space-magic continuum?

The themed and beats of the movie aren't clear, including Kingsley's role. Everything is so downplayed, and the one traditional fight scene got Bogarted by Abomination

The end turns into Mulan Souls and a literal video game arena for the last duel

He got it on technicalities because someone had to bleep for 5 years

I didn't like the Narnia-esque final battle between their dad. There was even a lion creature, it gave too much Narnia vibes and that movie was already Disney trying so desperately to capture that sweet lotr/hp appeal. Just the whole them going to a secret world and all of a sudden they're training to fight a war and awkwafina becomes an archer and yeah :/

I assume people didn't like near the end when it became a kaiju battle? Thought I was watching godzilla for a sec

It's really weird that there's a dragon legend in this movie and awkwafina later becomes raya the last dragon in another movie

Shang Chi is worth watching twice and discussing

I feel like the movie would have been better had the father previously appeared in the MCU as an antagonist. His whole character arc is too rushed, so you don't get any real impact. The love interest is a jumbled mess of a plot line, especially where they have the lady who is good at driving suddenly take up bow and arrow out of nowhere instead of making her good at riding one of the mythical creatures of the land or something. The final antagonist is literally just a brainless beast with zero impact when they could have at least had it do something like take over the father's body as a conduit for speech.

Yeah I wasn't quite sure there myself. What was the theme, don't kill? Be like your dad and mom? Make the 10 rings into the power of good? The lack of explanations basically means stuff just happens.

Also they brought back ben kingsly lol, that gave me a few chuckles here and there.

yeah the third act was terrible but overall the movie was enjoyable

It has like zero coherence to Iron Man

A lot of the movie doesn't make much sense, but I kind of roll with it.

Yup... I will say I was outright bored during the dragon and chutuhulu tentacle monster battle, I found myself distracted and bored and it's a shame because what we want to see is more cool fight choreography for a final battle. They weren't even creative with it, like I thought maybe they'd take down the evil dragonish monster shadow of the colossus style or something to make it more engaging.

I definitely agree with the good ideas at the start sentiment, for both movies. But I completely disagree with Eternals sentiment, if doing something different is basically "be a DC movie" complete with the whole evil superman thing and the annoying color filter that DC uses to make everything look drab, among other problems/missed opportunities.

Agree with the rushed part. This feels like the exact same problem as Eternals and this new wave of Marvel movies. They're trying to go back and establishing all these characters as having existed all along but it's way too rushed and sloppy, the way they're doing it.

Good point about the conduit. Lol I'm suddenly getting Mortal Kombat vibes, like maybe he transforms to trick him into thinking his wife is there or something

Mortal Kombat half-sucked too, IMO

I feel like Cole and Sean could be the same guy, almost. And Mandarin is Shang Tsung

I agree completely - especially the comparison to Eternals, which people speculated didn't do well because it didn't follow the Marvel "formula". I liked that they decided to explore conflict in motivations between the characters instead of the typical heroes discover their powers story.

I didn't notice the color filter, but that's a good point... still I liked that they tried something more Watchmen like as it made me more interested in how things would turn out at the end...

Others said that it should have been a show like a Disney plus series, and I would agree if it weren't for the repressed horror flashbacks from the last time they tried to do a family of superheroes show cough inhumans cough

You know I watched Eternals first even though it released after, because ShangChi had the much higher RT rating so I thought I'd save best for last between the 2, but... this certainly wasn't the Black Panther equivalent for Asians or anything like that.

Also now explains why I didn't see that much discussion about it after it came and went, it probably felt middle of the road for most people

Yeah it just felt like a random hodge podge of avengers that had no chemistry with each other, but at least brie makes sense if the director knows her from before

I saw a Multiverse of Madness video that pointed out that he's wearing a green glowing wristband that looks like the depowering cuffs in Doctor Strange 2. That he may be using similar technology to revert to human form which would lead into the She Hulk series.

No spoilers please I'm only just now catching up to mcu, will catch up even more in august most likely.

I watched this yesterday and you guys are crazy. The final act was the best part of the movie.

No it was definitely the martial arts. Watching other mcu content reminded me of just how unfortunate it is that movie production in the west is on a fast time table so they opt for quick cuts and shaky cam editing instead of spending time perfecting hand to hand combat scenes, but when you do it makes a huge difference. Helps that a lot of the actors are actually veteran martial artists too

Just here to defend Awkwafina and also her show Nora from Queens on HBO Max is great
