I feel like the movie would have been better had the father previously appeared in the MCU as an antagonist. His whole character arc is too rushed, so you don't get any real impact. The love interest is a jumbled mess of a plot line, especially where they have the lady who is good at driving suddenly take up bow and arrow out of nowhere instead of making her good at riding one of the mythical creatures of the land or something. The final antagonist is literally just a brainless beast with zero impact when they could have at least had it do something like take over the father's body as a conduit for speech.

Agree with the rushed part. This feels like the exact same problem as Eternals and this new wave of Marvel movies. They're trying to go back and establishing all these characters as having existed all along but it's way too rushed and sloppy, the way they're doing it.

Good point about the conduit. Lol I'm suddenly getting Mortal Kombat vibes, like maybe he transforms to trick him into thinking his wife is there or something
