The board, upon reading the language in the suggested curriculum, sent the working draft back for revision.

For K-2, carefully examine the language used to describe events, specifically the term involuntary relocation, the state board wrote in its guidance to the work group.

So they aren't telling them that they can't remove the word slavery, just that the replacement they chose isn't good enough.

I wonder what they'd call the barbaric acts committed against the Native American tribes when we came over here acting like we owned this land, entitled to what it had and that we were meant to be their masters.

Not really, every year there are teachers in the news doing racist shit in the classroom about slavery.

There should be a level of cultural competence that teachers should have. I feel bad for BIPOC kids that have to deal with educators that harbor those kind of thoughts.

That's still rare, and I just mean that usually it's governmental forces trying to tell teachers to whitewash history or not talk about lgbt issues or racism.

The article says they dont currently teach about slavery at all in 2nd grade so I think this would actually be more than what they learn now? Still messed up trying to sugarcoat it though

but tbh I dont think I learned about slavery at all until 5th grade? Maybe 4th

They don't. Most of the south only exists because blue states subsidize them. Texas has only narrowly avoided a collapse of it's grid multiple times thanks to federal intervention.

Involuntary relocation doesnt sound very nice, either. Thats more like what we did to the natives, though. Slavery is slavery. Theres already a word for it and you dont move forward by rewriting history.
