...one of my classmates was downright adamant that he could get through the crust and reach the mantle of the Earth with just a shovel. Even when the teacher told him he couldn't he was like "I'm gonna go home and get started tonight", like he was almost mad that she told him he wouldn't be able to do it. >_>

The next few days when we kept asking him he said he had started in his yard but his dad wouldn't let him go any further, otherwise he'd be able to. lol kids are so dumb.

He's technically correct, but it's going to take a very long time.

It will definitely take more than one shovel after hitting stone.

In the kids defence, most of the inside is liquid, so once he got through the first bit he's suddenly like 80% done.

Take a while to get through that first bit though.

Maybe he saved lawn-mowing money to buy a second one.

When entire governments can't dig remotely that deep, there's no chance of some rube with a shovel.

I admire that kid's spirit

I still don't know if he was being truthful about starting the hole because kids make shit up to their friends all the time, but can you imagine his dad's reaction?

"Hey son, looking for buried treasure or something?"

"No, I'm gonna prove my teacher wrong and reach the mantle of the Earth"

"....stop fucking up my yard and stick to video games kid"

And if anyone's wondering why I suddenly remembered this, I saw a post about a new moronic tiktok challenge of people digging as far as they could at the beach:
