The law is for any music that's "plainly audible" at a distance of 25 feet away or more. If it's quiet outside, a normal conversation can be heard at that distance. Real easy to pull over whoever they want, with such a low threshold.

Okay if thats the case its a fucking stupid law.

I am thinking more within the threshold of what others posted, music thats so loud that it shakes your window and door frames. Which even when music is that loud, it seems avoidable by just rolling up your windows.

The spirit of the law is to give police an excuse to harass minorities. Again, that's not a potential side effect, it's literally 100% of the intention behind it.

While we mostly agree, the spirit of the law will fight against the assholes that blast music past midnight and keep people up. But yes, we both know that isn't how they're going to implement it.

If it was a decibel limit then it would say that. It's a feet limit and last I checked the cops don't patrol with rulers.

Most states already have this or a law about the decibel rating.

You're not getting it. This law was designed with the INTENTION of being abused. That was the reason for it, the only goal. It's the single desired outcome. This isn't a law passed to solve some problem that police will misuse. It's being created as a tool for police to use against minorities.

The police are the problem, yes. But giving them more tools is bad. Nothing good comes of this law. This law will NOT be used to cut down on nighttime noise. It will NOT help reduce how often windows will be rattled. Since literally no benefits will come from passing this law, but a lot of harm will come from passing this law, it is a bad thing that this law is passed. Because police are evil and politicians that want to specifically expand on those evil actions are also evil.

You ever wonder how all those bad, obviously racist laws got on the books? Take a good look at this topic and you'll see how.

The next time you hop in your car you should turn your music to whatever volume you're accustomed to, get out and use your tape measure to measure 25 feet from your vehicle, then adjust the volume knob accordingly.

This procedure doesn't apply if you're not black or Hispanic.

I always think I'm playing my music insanely loud when I'm in the car, then I get out and shut the door and can't hear it at all.

I have to imagine that people that play music loud enough that you can hear it outside the car have, or will develop, hearing loss issues.

Good idea in theory. Though should also be time / location dependent. If it's out in the middle of nowhere especially during daylight hours, that's very different from around houses at night.
