The Democrats unorthodox strategy of pushing conservative and far-right Republican primary candidates in Colorado in order to face potentially weaker opponents in November fell flat on Tuesday. Three GOP candidates who were boosted by funding from Democratic campaign groups all lost their races in The Rocky Mountain State, which is serving as a testing ground for the Democrats move to favor candidates that they believe would repulse moderate or independent voters and stem forecasted losses for the party in the midterm elections. Rep. Ron Hanks lost the GOP Senate primary to moderate Colorado businessman Joe ODea. Former state Rep. Lori Saine lost to Sen. Barbara Kirkmeyer in the states new 8th Congressional district. And Greg Lopez was defeated by businesswoman Heidi Ganahl in the GOP gubernatorial primary.

The Democratic Colorado Super PAC has dropped at least $2.5 million on the GOP Senate primary, airing ads designed to promote Hanks candidacy by calling him too conservative for Colorado, highlighting his positions on abortion and whether Joe Biden won the 2020 election. As for Lopez, the Democratic Governors Association ran its own paid content about the far-right candidate, calling him too conservative, according to the Denver Post. The group in a statement told the Denver Post Lopez was too extreme and out-of-touch but would not answer questions why they would attempt to help Lopez in the short term. Finally, in the 8th House race, Saine got financial backing from House Speaker Nancy Pelosis PAC. Kirkmeyer got 40% of the vote while Saine only received 19.6% with 97% of the votes tallied.

This just shows Dems dont understand the GOP party enough to run the right ads to win a GOP primary. Let alone convince them to vote for them in the general election in those House/Senate seats.

I mean, what they were trying is fucking stupid and a waste of money; however, the farthest right Repubs lost their primaries, so I'm fine with the outcome even though the method was god awful.

Remember when they did that in the 2016 presidential primary, at some point you would think they'd learn.

Having your platform be we are not Republican/Trump has been enough to win. If not bribing has also worked. Like saying they will cancel student loan debts or raise the national minimum wage.

This is, of course, the exact strategy that saw Hillarys campaign pushing for Trump to win the GOP primary in 2016.

I have to wonder why Democrats are this stupid. It has to be a combination of the delusional old farts never retiring and mass cronyism to where nobody competent gets put in valuable positions because they're taken up by politician X's friend/donor.

Seems like things turned out the opposite way this time. Which, for any political strategist with half a brain, should indicate quite definitively that this tactic doesn't fucking work no matter how you slice it.

It worked exactly one time that Im familiar with, which was in 2012 when Claire McCaskill used attack ads against Todd Akin (you might remember him as the legitimate rape guy) to float him to the front of the GOP Primary before defeating him in the general.

The flip-side of this is that using a tactic of propping up far-right Republicans in an effort to elect centrist Democrats, over the long term, shifts the window of policy-discussion and what sort of behavior or beliefs are normal and acceptable for debate ever rightwardthe fruits of which were demonstrated when McCaskill went on to lose her seat in 2018 to none other than right-wing blowhard and eventual insurrection supporter Josh Hawley.

So even if it did work, which it doesnt most of the time, its a terrible tactic in the long-term.

Democrats, you don't need to fund the GOP, just focus on regular Americans in your party and not the <8% of crazy activists on Twitter. Abandon the far left and stick to the 90+% rational Democratic base you have built over the past century and a half.
