Reasons people could major in Philosophy that's not directly to find a job:
  • already has a job and/or financially independent, doing it for self-fulfillment
  • second/double major, often supplements a first major like pre-law or psychology
  • interested in engaging in philosophy-related research to advance our collective knowledge
  • meeting the undergrad requirement for a master's or doctorate program that accepts any completed undergrad major (and happens to love philosophy so it's a win/win)
  • used as professional development to enhance critical thinking skills, analytical skills, research skills, and argumentative skills (due to the way the subject is taught)
  • in a philosophy graduate program (the vast majority of doctoral programs are PhDs, or Doctorates in Philosophy), which employs most researchers and professors

Some majors are purely to complement your set of skills and not to depend entirely on.

Also, many people have this misconception that a degree (any degree) guarantees a job, which isn't the case at all. It gives you skills and knowledge but the job hunting and the career path are entirely on you and you alone. It is not uncommon to have young people with a Computer Science degree unable to find a decent job with the degree alone.

You can get a job through the power of "networking." Know a guy who became a program manager because his buddy recommended him.

Ahh yes, I knew I forgot a reason. Some people just want the college experience, and pick a major that most interests them while doing college stuff, which for some is philosophy. (I guess that's an extension of my first point).

Ding ding.

But people want to troll to make themselves feel better about themselves, probably because they are unhappy with their own circumstances and level of success.

I majored in philosophy because my plan was to go to Law School.

that plan changed about midway into my undergraduate, but since I had no other goal besides graduating, I just decided to stick with it.

it hasn't been ideal, but the following work experience that I had has given me a few decent opportunities.

Critical thinking is hilariously political

Welcome to life. I spent 14 years honing my art, and Im still not as good at comics as your average marvel/dc guy.

You just gotta make the best of what you have. And if you end up wasting a chunk of life on something that doesnt pan out, just consider it a learning experience.
