A school can't compel you to pray, but can't forbid you from praying either.

I believe he was told he couldn't do it with his players it had to be done alone, so he stopped all together and someone else sued on his behalf.

He accepted the position, and for the next seven years prayed on the field after the games - sometimes alone and sometimes with players - apparently with little notice or controversy.

That changed after a game in September 2015, when an opposing coach notified the Bremerton school principal of his actions. The school informed Mr Kennedy that his prayers could be construed as a school endorsement of religion, which run afoul of a long line of US Supreme Court cases that limited religious activities in public education.

Mr Kennedy refused, and after a post-game prayer that October, became a public and media spectacle, with a crowd of spectators gathering on the field around the coach, the school placed him on leave.

At the end of the season, instead of attempting to renew his one-year coaching contract with the school, he sued Bremerton for infringing on his constitutional right to freedom of religion and sought to make his case on a nationwide media tour.

Thats wild. After every college football and nfl game you see people praying so I wouldve thought high school was the same.

It pretty much is. Even if they aren't praying, it's common for players to kneel around the coach after the game while he says stuff.

I don't see why anyone would argue the decision. He's not making you or anyone else do it, he's just acting on his own for how he feels. He should have every right to if it's not disruptive.

It's protecting HIS rights to express his faith, it's not mandating anything above that.

Honestly I respect people who live openly in faith but heed others' decision to participate or hear them out. Living by example without being overbearing or unwelcome.

Imagine being upset about a man being able to pray by himself after a sporting event and calling anyone else a religious fascist.

It's insane that this wasn't a 9-0 unanimous ruling.
