The Supreme Court Monday issued a ruling in favor of a Washington state football coach who sought to kneel and pray on the field after games. The court ruled 6-3 along ideological lines that former high school football coach Joe Kennedys prayer was protected under the first amendment. The Constitution and the best of our traditions counsel mutual respect and tolerance, not censorship and suppression, for religious and nonreligious views alike, Justice Neil Gorsuch wrote in the majority opinion. The ruling is the latest of several from the court in favor of religious plaintiffs. The court ruled last week that the state of Maine cannot exclude religious schools from a public program offering tuition aid to private school students, a move that will make it easier for religious institutions to receive taxpayer money.

This goes back to prayer in schools, really. A school can't compel you to pray, but can't forbid you from praying either.

If any individual wants to kneel and pray after a game, go nuts.

The problem is if/when members of the team and staff are pressured to join them and/or ostracized if they dont.

Yeah, unless he was forcing everyone on the team to pray or something, I don't see why this went to SCOTUS. Someone wasted a lot of time and money with this one.

From what I understand, Republicans turned this man into a folk hero. There was probably pressure for the judges to deal with this case

the question was sort of fundamentally whether your coach publicly praying in front of you and the rest of the team you're on, with an "open invitation" for you to join in, is compulsion

as they consistently do of late, SCOTUS argues he is not explicitly saying he will kick you off the team if you don't join in so he's not compelling you, much like they said that campaign donations that aren't explicitly cartoon money bags with dollar signs on them being exchanged for a signed contract to support specific policy positions are not explicitly bribery

He accepted the position, and for the next seven years prayed on the field after the games - sometimes alone and sometimes with players - apparently with little notice or controversy.

That changed after a game in September 2015, when an opposing coach notified the Bremerton school principal of his actions. The school informed Mr Kennedy that his prayers could be construed as a school endorsement of religion, which run afoul of a long line of US Supreme Court cases that limited religious activities in public education.

Mr Kennedy refused, and after a post-game prayer that October, became a public and media spectacle, with a crowd of spectators gathering on the field around the coach, the school placed him on leave.

At the end of the season, instead of attempting to renew his one-year coaching contract with the school, he sued Bremerton for infringing on his constitutional right to freedom of religion and sought to make his case on a nationwide media tour.

It pretty much is. Even if they aren't praying, it's common for players to kneel around the coach after the game while he says stuff.

I don't see why anyone would argue the decision. He's not making you or anyone else do it, he's just acting on his own for how he feels. He should have every right to if it's not disruptive.

Who gives a flying fuck what someone does on the field after the game is over? I'm not exactly a big proponent of religion, but this is literally a nothingburger IMO.

Hell, both teams kneel together and pray on the field if a player gets hurt bad during the game.

It's protecting HIS rights to express his faith, it's not mandating anything above that.

I'm just surprised they needed to drag this to the highest court in the land. You'd think this would have been dealt with at a lower court.

Now that said if this causes a slippery slope precedent where the implications are perverted to actually impinge on the separation of church and state with no pushback then that would be unacceptable but in as many words as the topic is saying I don't see any conflict.

Him coercing his players either directly or indirectly to participate is not within his personal choice.

It's insane that this wasn't a 9-0 unanimous ruling.

And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

This dude was so far up his own ass that he was inviting journalists and politicians to come watch him pray on the field. Truly a shining example of the faith.
