There has been precisely one good story in the entire history of Star Wars told from the perspective of the Empire and that's TIE Fighter. That is the only story that portrayed them, much as most of the early EU did, as a believable dictatorship that relied on propaganda and space-nationalism to coerce people into supporting them and fighting for them. You were not subjugating free peoples, you were bringing order and prosperity to lawless worlds; you were not crushing rebel freedom fighters, you were destroying nests of terrorists. And you didn't play some simpering generic hero whose defection to the Rebellion can be spotted in the opening cutscene; you played a patriotic Imperial pilot whose loyalties were never called into question.

It was really, really good. Then around the early 2000s Lucasfilm decided that the Empire should be cartoon villains instead of anything with any believability to it and any story that focused on them basically painted them as an organization that was so over-the-top evil from top to bottom that Hitler himself would be saying, "Guys, dial it back a little!".

Long live the Empire!

I know the entire point of most of these shows/movies are nostalgia cash grabbing, something the entirety of Hollywood is doing (which is generally profitable even if not always critically successful), so Disney would never do this, but I think Star Wars should move away from the original trilogy entirely.

Have a story that takes place in the Star Wars universe that has nothing to do with the original trilogy or it's characters. Maybe something set in a completely different time, that isn't effected by the original trilogy at all.

That just sounds like it would be out of character.

I liked it, revenge of the sith is my favorite of the Star Wars movies followed by attack of the clones.
