even 4 and 5 has better bgm than 6.
the only memorable from 6 is the opening, Maria(?), and Dancing Mad.

VII's, easily. VI has some great highs but it is nowhere near as consistent as VII for quality.

6, although 7s is still great.

The PS1 midi quality definitely hurts 7, and although the composition has higher heights that 6 even, I tend to feel like 6s OST tends to be rather timeless while 7s has not aged as well.

Im a sucker for the SNES sound chip though, so I just could be a bit biased.

Probably FF7. Both are pretty great, though.

7, but its really really close

Also, 7 has my favorite regular battle theme in the entire series (Let the Battles Begin), while 6 has my favorite boss battle theme in the entire series (Decisive Battle)

They're both "midi". The difference is the PS1 had a waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better sequencer than most PCs at the time.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portable_Sound_Format

Edit: the difference is that instead of synthesizing the sound, like with midi, raw audio sample data was provided that would play according to instructions. So like instead of recording a 1 minute song where you play the same guitar riff 20 times, you record the guitar riff once and order the PlayStation to play it 20 times across 1 minute.

well, this means even FFXIV still using "midi" then?

The actual sound quality on the PS version was much better than the PC, it had nothing to do with the sequencers (heck, I had an audiophile card back then and it still sounded terrible by comparison). And you are confusing the blending with the format. FFVII used a blend to seamlessly move the music, but that isn't something unique to the PS1 version: the PC version did as well.

You are, however, correct about synthesizing versus raw audio data. That, however, kind of shows the point: the PS1 version didn't use the synthesized data, meaning that it didn't use MIDI. That's kind of the point.
