I know we have a few fish keepers here. I hope a few of you are up now.

My Parrot is upside down but he is still living. When I touch him he goes back to normal for a little bit then just back to being upside down. I know this isn't a good sign. Is there anything I could do to save him?

I picked him up and put in a small isolation bucket and now he is swimming right side up. So that is a little hopeful.

Just off that information, it may be a swim bladder infection, which in fish, is generally fatal. You can hospital tank him if you have a smaller setup and use some antibiotics if you have some on hand. Really avoid the store stuff that hangs on peg hooks and fizz, or turn your water blue, that stuff is junk. I'd find a local retailer in the morning, not a chain, if you have one.

Thanks I am looking that up now. He is in a bucket by himself so he if he lives he would not be beat up by anyone. I saw something that said don't feed him for 3 days. I new this could happen to gold fish. I didn't think it could happen to parrots.

if it's a swim bladder problem, you can only try so much regarding treatment, but if it's constipation, that can also cause swim bladder problems and going upside down. leave it be without feeding it for a while and see if it poops. if it doesn't within like a day, i read you can try to feed it a pea to help clear waste. boil it so it's soft, take the skin off so you just have the inner green glob, and try and get it to eat that.

I had a couple parrot fish at one point in a tank with green terrors and a larger firemouth, it functioned like a community tank but I didn't get a lot of life out of the parrot fish. I got them around 3 years old i'd guess, about 5 inches, and got 3 more years out of them.

I had him for like 3 years I guess. I just call him Orange, lol.
I guess when I move to the new place I would have to build a new community. :(

He was in tank with turtles. There is a One big turtle, a tiny turtle , a convict and him. And that all got along well. He would chase the turtles some times lol. But beyond that nothing major.

He is a very beautiful fish, I hope he survives.

Well not much more to report. He is a slower down :(. But he is still living and if flip him over he still swims up right for a little while before flipping over. As for right now it is only the waiting game to see if can right himself with isolation. There is a trick where you can give them a pea. But he is in no shape to eat :(.But I am still hoping.

Honest it just sucks so bad , because in a week or so I am going to get a 125 or 180. And then move him into a 90 gallon. So I hope he can stay around for that.

You can bring him to a vet and they can check if he has an infection.

you dont want to give antibiotics if he doesnt have an infection.

I don't have fish vets in my area and only one I have within in a hour can't take him until Monday. When I do move, I need to make sure that I find vets that can deal with my different type of pets. I had a vet kill one of my turtles because he or she ( don't know what they were since they never spoke with me), didn't know what sideneck turtle was and tried to fix his neck.

Maybe you could ask at a pet store? If you call your local vet school, they might know a clinic that specializes in this.

pet store will just tell him the same thing. A vet who knows fish will draw fluid from the bladder and see if its bacterial.

Just because he's got swim bladder disorder, doesn't mean he'll neccesarily die anytime soon.

And he is not bloated he looks normal. Just upside down.

If its just constipation he may be fine once he passes some fecal matter.

I know most cases of bacterial infection they become bloated because the bladder becomes swollen as a result.

Thanks for asking. He is still kicking. But now floating on his side. I tried to pea thing but he didn't eat it.

did he poop at all in isolation? if not and you think he's constipated, you honestly might have to just grab him and stick the pea in his mouth yourself. making sure it's nice and soft not too big to cause an obstruction itself, of course
