I don't normally ask for pronouns from my students, but I do use the right pronouns if they or their friends correct me.

I also ask for a preferred name at the beginning of the year. Usually it's "Mike" vs. "Michael", but there are a handful of kids who have a different preferred name and I'll always honor that.

Frankly we should as a society all get in the habit of asking someone for their pronoun when we meet a new person similarly to how we ask for peoples names

The conventional wisdom is not to ask, but have students provide that information privately. While it may seem like the teacher is helping or being inclusive by doing so, most of the time it simply puts a target on some student's back who may just want to blend in.

Just say your pronouns. It's not even hard. If someone asks, say "He/Him" or whichever, and then it's over. You survived.

This doesn't affect me. I'm no longer in middle school. Go on and take two minutes to find out what pronouns the kids are comfortable with.

It may be a minor inconvenience, but it's worth it to avoid the awkwardness of misgendering someone.

When you talk with a student, you use their name, you don't use a pronoun. Even if you don't use their name, you us a second-person pronoun like 'you'. Third person pronouns are never used when the subject is there.
