Something always seemed romantic about them, even though I could never stand the smell.

No. My lungs suck and I rather not breath in the smoke. Specially since smokers keep smoking near entrances even with signs saying you have to be 25 feet away.

Nah. I like a cigar from time to time, and a smoke after a few drinks can be damn nice, but if all kinds of smokes were to disappear tomorrow I wouldn't care.

I havent had one in years, but there is something so satisfying about being pissed off and having a cigarette.

I cant even describe it.

I miss that when Im mad.

Nope. My nana had a stroke from smoking cigarettes. She was never able to care for herself or talk normally again.

Maybe I just think like this because I grew up with a lot of people and friends and girlfriends smoking.

I remember my grandma being drugged out in hospice with cancer and instead of saying her goodbyes she just kept screaming she wanted a cigarette. This was what she did the last 3 hours of her life.

It's a disgusting addiction and I wish I would be alive when they are finally completely gone.

It's not just that, it's hard to explain

Like cigarettes have had a place in society and culture for so long as so many things to mean this or suggest that or show something.

What replaces that aspect. Artistically and culturally.

Nothing, vaping, or weed

Not at all. I live in the Southern US and the idea of anyone seeing any degree of romanticism in cigarettes is pretty funny to me

I actually get your perspective. Obviously, smoking was a recreational activity, just like, say, drinking. And a smoke break is enjoyable for smokers like a coffee break is for coffee drinkers. Hollywood and ads also glamourized it to be "cool".

That said, it's just not worth the cost. The world will be inherently better off without cigarettes.

Cigarettes are awesome in the morning with a cup of coffee, after a big meal, a night of drinking, and after sex.

But as a smoker for 10+ years now I wish I never started.

no, and i'm a smoker (weed and the occasional cigar).

I only smoke when I'm drunk and someone let's me bum one. Going out for a smoke when you're at the club/bar is always a good idea.

I'm honestly glad it's taking a down turn, I had too many relatives in Vietnam who passed because of health complications from their addiction to cigarettes. Granted, it was a cultural thing in Vietnam to smoke it any many of the older generation didn't know it was bad for them.

I would love it if they were banned forever.

I never actually smoked myself (sometimes I would, at most smoke a whole cigarette throughout the night) but I was never really a smoker. That's why I said non smoker in the title

Maybe I fell for the marketing, but I didn't buy any(for me, I don't think) I mean more from an artistic and cultural one.

Like in a TV show, movies, books, art , anime, literally whatever, smoking has conveyed something about the character and such.

Anyways this is more of a wow it's gone thing than an I want cigarettes everywhere and the terrible effects of smoking. Like the end of an Era or something

Usually something along those lines but it could mean a lot more. Like they're old school, don't get along with society, sad or troubled inside, and so on. I don't know.

Maybe I'm just having a mid life crisis at 28 and wish I had smoked with all my friends back then or just something about it being gone. Like it was so influential as a teenager and now it's gone. Like, to a shocking degree.

I get what you're talking about like in film noir genre's where smoking was used in an "artistic" fashion, but it's just like everyone said it was more of marketing from big tobacco companies that conditioned us to romanticize cigarettes for the longest time. Very similar to wedding rings in that regard, except smoking has a negative connotation while expensive wedding rings don't.

I know, it changed society in a bad way

And now it's gone and society is better off for it

But to me it still seems kinda sad. Even if it was a bad thing, it was so engraved in our culture from art, to film to TV to everything, even life, until now, when it'sso noticeably not.

I mean, i'd never do it and have no inclination to, but i enjoyed watching John McClane go around with a gun and a cigarette hanging out of his mouth because it kind of added to the character.

Apone in Aliens is another example. Him chewing on that cigar was gross, sure, but it was part of his character and I liked it.

Am i making any sense? Lol
