I'm about eight or so episodes in right now and it doesn't have me completely captivated yet. It seems like all the "spooky" elements depend on very dated CGI. And there doesn't seem to be any sort of B-plots that carry over from episode to episode. So right now it seems like I could watch the episodes in any order and not miss out on anything, which is kind of a letdown. It's one of the highest rated sci-fi shows, so I imagine it does get better, but when?

There is definitely an underlying and ongoing story, it's been a while since i've watched but maybe it began more as an episodic series and moved into that more later when the show had staying power.

I'd urge you to stick with it, because it's a pretty brilliant show overall, but I understand that it's dated and might not be for everyone.

It's odd, in the 90s it was the GOAT, but it has not aged well and if you don't like it now, you're just gonna get more and more frustrated with it and despise it.

Damn. You just made me realize my attempt to begin it was 10 years ago. I think it bled into about 6 years ago where i never ended up finishing it. I started watching it at the end of binges. Which was kind if interesting. Fading in and out of consciousness whole watching X-Files. I think that's the canon experience. That's how you really get to the truth. It's gotta be spliced into your unconscious dream state.

This.
I've tried rewatching it multiple times and I can't even make it to the end of season 1 despite loving it back in the day.

I think that's exactly where I stopped. It did get less interesting over time. I think I agree with the guy who said seasons 3-4 were prime. I feel like that's where I was most invested. I hardly remember shit at this point tho.

Could be that you just might not like it. But Season 1 does get better and truly starts setting up the series' main plot toward the end.

Be aware of course that the main plot was never really given a satisfying ending to most people. I think the first six seasons and the first movie are all really good. But everything after that is for if you just really enjoy the show.

Would I be missing out on much if I just jump to those? I imagine the show continues to confine each mystery to one episode all the way through?

Nah, there are multiple season long plots and multi parters. You'd likely miss out on a ton of a setup.

Xfiles does a lot of shit where they set things up in early episodes and then don't resolve them until much later like the plot with Krycek

The episodes that aren't connected to the story are where the real heart of the series lies. I can say this now, because the actual story never actually gets completed, and every opportunity they have to do so is completely and hilariously squandered.

Metal Gear Solid is basically X-Files with CIA agents instead of FBI affects.

When I try to rewatch, I usually just end up watching just the more comedic episodes and skipping the rest.

Doing a watch now, just finished S3 E2. Don't know what you don't like about it. Seems about as good as 90's procedurals go

S1 reuses a lot of plots and takes a bit to start forming its ongoing narratives but it gets there

it's also not the kind of show youd watch expecting episodes to continuous narratives every episode

This, so hard. The main story isn't even all that great past season 3. Just enjoy the stand-alone episodes
