That is the Souls formula. Elden Ring actually took so many steps to guide players through the major sidequests including the map markers. It's not bullshit that I am essentially getting my cake and eating too by doing another nearly blind playthrough, and taking different routes, not exactly knowing what's in store. Besides, Elden Ring like all other Souls games is about multiple playthroughs and helping friends. We don't get that if you can do it all solo the first run. Not even easily. Like. At all
What if I have a job and play more than a handful of games? I don't have the luxury for a ton of playthroughs of a giant open world game.

What if I had bad Internet or no friends?

I think there's some ulterior motive here in a lot of places in this thread.

1.) People bashing Elden Ring because (insert their favorite game here) now has Soulslike mechanics.

2.) People bashing Elden Ring solely on the grounds of it being open world. When really, they just wanna bash a Souls game.

3.) People focusing on the behavior of side characters, or fabricating glitches, when in reality they inferred through the game more than well enough.

Like most things I like, I just really despise the community. And there is zero inferral for a number of side quests. No indication of backtracking. Not even subtle hints

I don't like it and don't give a fuck that you do

If I complain about pay to win or too much handholding in a game, no one would jump in and tell me to stop complaining about what the developer wants or what fans like.

You know what elden ring quest pisses me off?

The dude in the castle. You can easily miss his daughter who gives you a note to give to him, then you can easily miss him, who's in a castle and in a corner thats surrounded by enemies and easily missable, then you have to beat the boss without instruction only a passing line from the dad, then you have to go back to him at the castle, then go back to daughter to find out shes dead, then go to some random cabin in the bumfuck of nowhere to fight the dad as an invader.

And the worst part is you get the same rewards if you kill him outright on first meeting! You see their quest design works for games where it's pretty linear. It doesn't work for open-world games like Elden Ring

Not bitching doesn't make you guys right either. Souls fans have a lot to say about other games, but you can't say anything about Souls games. They're perfect and any perceived flaws are just people outside the target audience trying to take away what you love.

I went to Roundtable after the boss fight and the dude was gone when I went back. I think you have to fast travel to get back to that part of the castle, so I guess I just travelled too far away?

No, you kill the boss then tell him you killed him. He gives you a weapon then he dips to where his daughter is I believe.

As someone with very little free time for gaming myself I actually kinda like that the game is so massive and cryptic it'll take a good while to fully mine through, but either way there are plenty of games out there that fit your temporal restrictions and every game truly doesn't need to suit your particular tastes/needs. There is no "right", these are subjective opinions...you can say whatever you want but the moment you start trying to prove your subjective opinions are true or superior in some way people are gonna tell you about yourself. No hostility intended, just an observation and the advice to chill tf out before you have a heart attack and/or stroke

If you dont have the time to play a game the way it is designed to play, must complete it 100% the first time you play it and dont want to read any form of guides, then it doesnt matter how old or how much free time you got.

You said you despise the community but you make it abundantly clear that you have very little genuine interaction with souls fans. The community shits on most of 2, says 3 is just fan service, there's plenty of acknowledgement that the Elden Ring PC port is a poorly optimized mess and that Elden Ring in general has terribly balanced PvP and end game content

Someone disagrees with you about the quality of the quest system and you just strawman the hell out of what they're saying while ignoring everything above

I just want an opportunity to figure it out on my own, but I need to at least know what "it" is. You know a game can have design flaws, right? I can't think of a series around that doesn't have design flaws.

But we can't acknowledge the terrible questing? Something that actually matters unlike whatever problem people have with 2 and 3, but something that's franchise-wide?

Edit: Ok I'm being in a bit of a mood. I take back the community barbs.

Idk, Souls game throwback heavily to old RPG mechanics, its quest system being one of them. It hasn't changed at all over the past decade, I wouldn't expect it to at all at this point. I disagree that the open world nature of Elden Ring makes this "worse", as you could just as easily "break" quests in past titles as well.

He doesn't disappear until you show him the sword of the boss. So there's no way that you left and he was gone. You show him the weapon there then he goes to his daughter.

He was gone from the castle. Found him at daughter and then he left until I found him at Revenger's Shack

On my first playthrough, I never even saw that guy at the castle. The first time I found him was as the Revenger, and I didn't think anything of it until I was looking the quest up later.

Yeah the quests are a weak point of the game imo. There are mid to late 90s crpgs that have better quest design lol.
Maybe the quests are intentionally obtuse to force people to communicate with eachother online? That is what people told me on the elden ring steam discussions page whenever i critcized it back in march. Ofc most just use a guide anyways

Still a 9/10 game imo
