Judd Apatow, Mark Ruffalo, Jimmy Kimmel, Damon Lindelof, Adam McKay, Julianne Moore, Shonda Rhimes, Eli Roth, Mark Ruffalo, Amy Schumer, and John Glickman are among the first round of signatures for a petition calling for the film and TV industry to re-examine its influence on national gun violence in the U.S.

The petition, titled Open Letter to Our Colleagues in the Creative Community, calls for studios to model responsible gun safety practices in productions and curb portrayals of guns in scenes involving children. The effort, led by activists Christy Callahan, the co-chair of the Brady United Against Gun Violence organizations Regional Leadership Council, and Robert Bowers Disney, comes after the Uvalde elementary school mass shooting on May 24.

americas issue with guns, along with a lot of other problems we're staring down right, is not something that can change in a meaningful way by altering how they are presented in media. in fact, if there was any effect at all from trying to get rid of stuff like action movies, not only would it be marginal but it would take literal generations before that marginal effect kicked in

At least they're willing to put their money where their mouths are finally. It's always weird seeing Hollywood actors and producers decry gun culture while gleefully participating and profiting from it.

I think both things can be true

I think in an intelligent society, it is fantasy and doesnt do any harm.

in a gun fetishized society filled with angry racists, watching those fantasies could be harmful to others

a petition is not the answer. Censorship is not the answer. The answer is less guns.

Despite the fact that it is unlikely to have any kind of impact in anyway, at least they are attempting to do something. Unlike the politicians that can actually make meaningful changes, who are making zero meaningful attempts to do anything.

Seems kinda dumb lol.

America is not the only media culture with a fuck ton of guns in their tv and movies, but is somehow the only one where mass shootings are a regular occurrence. and thinking guns are kewl isnt going to have a significant effect on people's opinions of gun regulation.

The cultural fetishization of guns that deliberately obstructs attempts at regulation are rooted in outdated conservative beliefs and a worship of traditional authority structures like the police and military, and are largely unrelated to Hollywood. While mass shootings have been linked to a phenomenon of media glamorization, it's specifically of how the news glamorizes those incidents.

Tl;dr: their heart is in the right place and something is probably better than nothing, but movie/tv representation of guns, by all accounts, isn't what's feeding America's cultural problems when it comes to guns.
