I live in Alabama and saw 2 people got shot in Baltimore on my local news. 2 people probably get shot every day in Baltimore and it is 1000 miles away

It's playing of the lone gunman phenomenon. It's a hot word, so they use it. I would argue that the definition in this story is pay attention. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for stricter gun law because gun violence in this country is fucked, but this is a pretty clear case playing into what's hot.

3 dead and 11 others injured fits the definition of a mass shooting.

It doesn't make sense to keep insisting that only one person got shot in this incident.

Yes except the problem is different media outlets and different countries all define it differently and the US DOJ has no accepted legal definition nor is "mass shooting" a thing you can be charged with by a prosecutor.

When the spree shooting happened at YouTube headquarters everyone was calling it a mass shooting even though nobody died.

And it's better this way because constraining a mass shooting to some arbitrary definition sidelines how bad America's gun violence actually is.

Under something like a 4-victim definition Randy Stair would not be considered a mass shooter and that's obviously wrong.

This to me seems to be that Mr. Whittington and Mr. Dukes-Hill, in response to gun shots that were happening down the street, just took out their gun and randomly fired. And unfortunately Alexis Quinn was hit by a shot fired by Mr. Dukes-Hill and Mr. Minners was hit by a shot fired by Mr. Whittington," the ADA said."

Accurate. It's really the point where even a double homicide just gets a quick blurb on the evening news. Like, you hear how any city has places you don't go at night, and places that are run down and bad even during the day right? Well, in Baltimore even the rich white neighborhoods that are still there and the touristy areas aren't safe during the day anymore.
