They finally brought them altogether with Bowser, that's pretty sweet. The late 2000s and 2010s made Bowser seem like an absentee father to his previous kids when Bowser Jr came along, but Nintendo finally had them all in one game.

So how many are there, 7 and then Bowser Jr? But who is the big Red-shelled Koopa who's in the middle fortresses?

Also yeah I think I'm finally getting the hang of this game... for now I'm just focusing on beating the levels and getting a handle on the controls rather than try to get all red coins/3 star coins etc in one go.

I feel like I've missed out on over a decade's worth of lore, who are all these toads on the team with mario and luigi? Who is that bandit looking creature?

I'm just playing as Luigi for now of course, just like with Super Mario Advance 2 (Super Mario World)

Yea they are all there together but the Koopa kids lost their birthright. They no longer are considered to be Bowser's children. Just some random young members of Bowser's species, who work for him

Honestly I think it's bullshit. Bowser Jr should never have existed. fuck him

And if the Shigeru Miyamoto is the mother of Bowser Jr., then the mother of the Koopalings is most likely Takashi Tezuka.

IIRC they never were his kids in Japan. It was an NA invention.

New Super Mario Bros Wii. Lore: When Mario, Luigi, Yellow Toad, and Blue Toad are celebrating Princess Peach's birthday in her castle, a large cake appears. Bowser Jr. and the Koopalings emerge from the cake and trap Peach inside. The cake is loaded onto Bowser's airship and it takes off, with Mario, Luigi, and the two Toads giving chase.
Real reason: The game supports 4 players at once and they couldnt figure out better characters for player 3 and 4.

There's not really a whole lot of lore there. For the blue/yellow Toads, it's pretty much what RetroGamer68 said. They were just there to be playable characters for player 3 & 4.

In the Switch version, they added in Toadette and Nabbit as "easy" characters. Toadette is Toad's "Shroommate" (roommate), but not a whole lot of lore for her. Nabbit, the bandit looking creature, is a bandit that, in the original game, would show up and steal items and you had to chase and catch him. Not much info about him, but I feel like he's just a Rabbid (from Mario + Rabbids) in a theif outfit.

Lemmy is the best.

I don't even know what most of these powerups I'm getting do. The flying squirrel costume seems to be this game's the cape but you can't actually fly, just glide down and get an extra jump... meh. Useful but not all powerful.

There's an ice flower now, that surprised me. There's still the traditional Fire flower for fireballs, but the ice flower actually makes enemies freeze into a block of ice that you can throw, and affects enemies that fire flower can't hurt. That seems more useful.

Wait do those red mushroom houses and green mushroom houses respawn? Also the green mushroom houses are kinda aggravating, getting 1-UP badges seems to be luck based.

There are different colored yoshis with different abilities... that's pretty sweet. Like super mario world's special colored yoshis concept but they took it even further. There's a yoshi that's a balloon, a yoshi that shines a light, a yoshi that spits bubbles...

And they all eat enemies, even the all powerful boos! Yay.

It's just the giant enemies like giant dry bones and giant bullet bill and giant boo that seem invincible to everything but the star.

Lol the hate towards bowser jr is pretty funny. I remember how shocking the twist was way back in super mario sunshine with the imposter mario being a mini bowser. It was definitely mindblowing at the time

Ok I'm happy with this game now. Just discovered a way to get 99 lives pretty easily. Just get a star and kill all enemies in a level and you can get like 15 lives in one go, it's pretty awesome. Now I can waste as many lives as possible in more difficult levels without worry.

Invisible walls that have no indication of whether or not they're invisible besides you bumping into every single wall in every single platform in every single level is not good game design, it's just tedious. I couldn't even proceed through soda jungle, I just knew there was a secret exit but for once it wasn't in the Boo house weirdly enough.

My hate to Bowser Jr is mostly cause of what he replaced. I probably wouldn't care if he had always been an only child

In a universe where the Koopa Kids didn't exist, Bowser Jr would be fine. But that's not the universe we live in. The Koopa Kids did exist and while they still do technically, they got demoted and it was because Boswer Jr showed up. I dont know why Miyamoto even invented him when the Koopa Kids already were around

That's a good theory, he does look like a rabbid.

They couldn't have gotten wario and waluigi? Nothing against Toad, I know he was in super mario advance, as was peach

Anyway I'm already on like, world 7 and does this game not have a manual or explanation of the new powerups?

The hints section only explains toadette and nabbit which I won't really use besides trying the peach powerup once (it's basically like playing peach in super mario advance)

I mostly want to ask about the gold mushroom with a propeller, does it have any use because it seems the flying squirrel already does a much better job at flying so should I just remove it from my item slots

Dang I'm already at peach's castle world. You know, this game has been pretty fun. I was in the mood for a 3d platformer but held off on playing 3d world in favor of this, and it has been a fun 2d platformer.

I think I might even go back and collect all the star coins.

I finally feel the game has "clicked" for me. If I catch nabbit, I get those super flying squirrel mushrooms that let me actually fly, not just glide. And if I get stars from the mushroom house, I can easily get nabbit and all the mushrooms to just fly through any difficult to collect star coins.

I also never have to worry about lives anymore and don't even bother with the green mushroom house. Found a perfect level where I get upwards of 15 lives per run.

I honestly prefer Jr to the Koopalings. They are kind of boring and they never do anything interesting with them. At least Jr has a set personality and a bit of a story.

Bowser Jr. is just Baby Bowser returning from Yoshis Island in the present day Mario canon, only as a separate individual to Bowser.

The boss fights in Super Mario Bros. 3 are their ages from youngest to oldest: Larry, Morton, Wendy, Iggy, Roy, Lemmy, and Ludwig.
