SA2. Although I don't necessarily believe that rails having artificial momentum is bad design. I think rails just moving you along on their own can be used well, even in an open world game where you often see a greater focus on physics. But I'm not a fan of what I've seen of Frontiers' physics so far. Looks too Boosty for me.

Have rails ever been physics-based in the post-adventure titles? I feel like this is just fishing for things to shit on. <_<

SA2 is overrated by Sonic fans. The Sonic/Shadow levels are alright for 2001 but the rest of the game has always been trash

I don't think they have been physics based outside of Adventure 2 specifically and kind of Heroes. And I think you're right about this topic too. But Adventure 2's hedgehog stages really did feel nice in terms of physics and it woulda been nice to return to that.

The mech stages are fun pew-pew arcadey stuff and the treasure hunting stages not called Mad Space or Egg Chamber are fun if you're not stressed about rank.

Oh I agree, I loved SA2's physics and the Dreamcast/Gamecube era is my favorite of Sonic's 3D outings. I just don't think that them doing something different means it'll be bad, especially since automated rails were a thing even in the games most sonic fans agree were good, like Generations. <_<

Gamma's entire campaign can be beaten in like, 5 minutes. The only good part is the giant mech fight on the Egg Carrier. But Gamma's story hits hard in the feefees so it gets a pass. <_<

Nah I agree. I don't actually mind accelerated rails as a rule. They were okay in Heroes and they weren't even what I hated about Forces. But the boost games generally seem to shit on your physics and momentum in favor of scripted speed, which I hate. If they wanna keep the on rails section on rails then fine, but let me have control over my running and jumping. Or at least some consistency with the physics.

I liked 2's treasure hunts better because the levels were actually designed for that gameplay. It was dumb that 2's radar only picked up one item at a time, but at least it allowed for more interesting hints than "It's here. It's right here. Just follow me it's right here." Although that is useless if you're going for an A rank anyway, but then a lot about getting A ranks in 2 is super unfun, especially in later levels (fuck basically every space stage's 2nd and 5th mission).

Only Pumpkin Hill and Meteor Herd had appropriate level design for it. The rest were in closed off spaces with nowhere near enough room to suit Knuckles and Rouge's movement.

Meh, their first stages had plenty of room to climb. The problem then is that climbing isn't as fun as running or gliding lol. The pyramid levels also had plenty of opportunities to use climbing and digging.

Anyway I really, really hate trying to do anything in Knuckles' Sky Deck when you tilt the ship, but to be fair, Mad Space's gravity garbage is just as bad, especially considering how many more times you need to deal with it when you're going for 100%.

The rail grinding is essentially identical to Sunset Overdrive which was fucking great so I'm looking forward to more of it in Sonic Frontiers.

That's overall whatever. Especially if you gain more speed on the rail if you have enough momentum.

But there appears to be no momentum in the speed of this game at all

Honestly, I went back and replayed SA1 and SA2 not long ago, and...SA2 aged worse. SA1 is snappy and simple, and it's just fun. The hub world was fun to run around in and explore, too. It has a better overall vibe to it.

SA2 isn't half as fun. The levels are more frustrating, and there aren't nearly enough Sonic/Shadow stages. They made the decision to more or less evenly distribute the stages into each gameplay style, so there are ~10 speed levels, ~10 treasure hunts, and ~10 mech/shooting stages (with some overlap between Hero and Dark versions)...

Sonic and Shadow should have been 60-70% of the game, not 33%.

Okay but fishing. Shooting and treasure hunting levels are practically fun sometimes. Fishing is actual agony.

That's some witchcraft right there. It took like five minutes to get Froggy to even notice the lure and another five to pull him in at max strain on the line. And the camera and controls are both fucking bonkers the whole time. At least in 2's mech and treasure hunt stages I can actually tell if I'm making progress. And for some reason Big has more stages than Amy, which is a crime against her as a character and as a mode of play.

Physics dont always matter but in sonic games they do, and somewhat correlates to the games overall quality usually and fluidity of its controls.

As for the series move to full open world It's interesting. But considering sonics emphasis on speed may be hard to implement as sonic has to move and traverse fast, but the world also needs to be big enough and diverse enough to accommodate it.

On another note I'm hoping other characters are playable, but adding them may be to much work.
