Its supposed to be inclusive for transpeople, especially those that are non-binary. If a self-described Latino or Latina refuses to use it even after being informed about its purpose then they are transphobic and theres no room in the Left for bigots.

AOC is right in calling out those Democrats. This isnt about them or their re-election, its not votes. Its about doing the right thing. Thats how were going to win.

Its as inclusive as it gets, no? Whats the difference between Latino and Latinx, really? Latinx may also include a group of only women.

From the opposite perspective though those people will view her as being quixotic, tilting at the imaginary monster that is the word 'latino' instead of focusing on the concrete problems facing society. E.g. asking themselves, "Why is she talking about this right now when people are getting gunned down left, right and center in this country?"

And I would look at someone weirdly if they somehow believed that AOC prioritizes Latinx language rather than the multiple multiple material things she's actually campaigned and legislated on.

But there are many low info voters out there, so I'm sure some would incorrectly believe she doesn't care about those things.

The consequence is still the same though. If she's perceived as focusing on such matters it will push voters away. Democrats as a whole tend to be a rather disparate bunch, so optics and presentation matters more to them when compared to Republicans: who get to lean on 'sticking it to the Dems' along with frequent use of guns, Jesus, and phrases du jour such as 'critical race theory'.

Which is quite sad but yes, I agree, Democrats have a difficult situation and the strength of the Republican media apparatus is very strong and makes it much harder. People have such low standards for Republicans that the bad they do gets a non-reaction from their voters

An example from Russian vs English is how the construction of the language impacts locus of control.

The Russian equivalent of English "I am happy" is essentially "(it) makes me happy" where it is an unspecified force that is the subject of the sentence and the person is the object of the sentence. Studies have shown that this leads to Russia people having a more external locus of control than Americans do. (External locus of control is more like "external forces control my life" versus an internal locus of control "I control my life").

As another Russian example, the standard "colors" in Russian include multiple distinct words for blue (which translate to essentially light blue and dark blue), and they score better on "blue identification" tests for that reason.

Its a dumb word but if an individual want to be referred with it Ill respect it and do so , Ill also say that I wouldnt want latinx to be used to describe me.

It's fine on an individual basis, but calling a community something it doesn't want to be called is some hypocritical bullshit if you care about respecting pronouns.

You don't end up describing a group in a way the majority of them don't want to be described, with that other stuff.

The article really wants to make it sound like she's saying people should use Latinx, but they couldn't find a quote. Rather, she's saying gender-inclusive language is important, and some examples of how people do that include Latine or, going backward in time a little, Latinx and Latin@. But the right panic machine gas already latched onto Latinx as a poor representation of existing Spanish grammar rules--even though we're talking about how to use more gender (not ethnically, as far as the motivation for finding a new word goes) inclusive language in the middle of English-language writing! Another bad faith red herring from the right, but it sure caught on here.

I don't think we're ready for that term.

they have expressed they do not appreciate having the buzz term pushed into their languages, let alone the heads of their children
public dissent over the term is not hard to find on social media or casual conversation, just talk to them at large

We run the full gamut of shades. There's an unfortunate legacy of racism built into it. The last 2 generations don't proactively care, but it's still in the subconscious of many.

It does feel like a fix for something nobody asked for a fix to. But, tbf, Im Hispanic and don't keep up with anything going on with my culture. Im more invested in other cultures.

As a Latino I really don't give a shit if you want to be called Latinx. I'll do it, just let me know. No skin off my teeth. But using it as a catch-all is dumb if you're not going to also completely rebuild Spanish from the ground up, which I don't think anyone really wants to do.

Ignoring that the people it would refer to don't like it, which you shouldn't do, but I am.

It's just a gutturally vicious word construct. It's off-putting for English language speech. It looks and sounds constructed rather than having a normal, natural sentence flow. It's really just unpleasant to say and to use in a sentence.
