I don't mind watching Let's Plays of games I've never played before and don't really plan on playing, or games that I just suck at. But it's agonizing watching someone play a game that you're actually good at because you end up just critiquing them the whole time.

Yeah for real.

However an interesting one is Half-Life 2. I've played that game a ton over the years and yet I can watch someone who's never played it before, and it is very often I'll see them find something new in a level I never saw before. The level design so packed with secrets.

Zelda 2 is like that for me. It basically has to be a damn good speedrun for me to not be annoyed by it, as I still have childhood muscle memories locked in of playing that game for months on end and getting damn good at it.

The only time I've really had any issue like that was watching Game Grumps play FireRed... Since he'd make bold, wrong statements about Pokemon and screw himself over constantly... Like putting Beedrill away against Sabrina (I think) because he claimed Bug wasn't good against Psychic...

I still dont understand lets plays

but do what you enjoy

I don't remember that, but I do know that he was using Beedrill as his last Pokmon alive against Claarf's last Pokmon, Alakazam. He decided to use Pursuit instead of Twin Needle, and it made him lose.

There was also the disaster of being too impatient to properly navigate the menu screen and causing himself to replace Charizard's Flamethrower with Wing Attack.

The only LPs I've watched like that are old games done by people who know them inside & out, so I don't run into that problem.

Like I recently watched a LP of Chrono Trigger because I was feeling nostalgic for the game but I didn't want to dig out old hardware & set things up again just to replay it.

LPs are best used as second monitor viewing.

I watched a LP of FFVIIR because I didn't have a PS4 but I was curious how it turned out. It's good for things like that, at least to me. Sometimes I wish I could experience games I like for the first time again so the next best thing is watching a LPer play it for the first time (or at least put on airs as if it is, not sure I believe some of them when they say it's a blind playthrough) but then inevitably it gets frustrating seeing them not pick up on something that's way obvious to you lol

With Game Grumps, I feel like the commentary is more the appeal than watching them play the game. Especially if Dan is retelling a story from his past, he has a lot of good stories and tells them well. At this point I think we can all just admit Arin sucks at gaming in general so I never really expect him to play well

I can't really imagine watching a lets play of a game I haven't played. Then I'm just watching some person play a video game. That'd be weird. When I'm watching a let's play of a game I'm playing, I'm watching for reactions to experiences that are known to me and insights I hadn't achieved on my own.

It doesn't bother me all that much if they're just playing normally. What annoys me is when you can tell they're intentionally playing poorly just because they have an audience.

Sometimes it's nice watching someone discover a game for the first time. Can't ever unplay a Phoenix Wright game.

Arin being bad at video games is one of the funniest things about Game Grumps. It's double hilarious because he does understand a lot of things about game design and concepts... he's just really bad at executing the gameplay lol
