i always thought riding bikes on the sidewalk was safer than the road. not sure why the law recommends otherwise (unless there is a bike lane, which lots of places in my town still do not have).

I sometimes do.
It depends on the line of sight.
And if I hear a car behind me.

But also, I kinda know ever dip and bump where I ride.

What sucks is, I need a new headlight.

Sidewalks are safer for the bike riders, not so much if it's a sidewalk that gets a lot of foot traffic. Luckily the sidewalks I ride on have very few people walking. I don't trust drivers enough to ride on the side of the road.

The ideal bike lane has a barrier between the road and bike lane anyways (except for moments like going to left turns).

But as others have said, its usually because Cars don't really know or care to respond to a bike on the street. So for a bike rider, it is safer to just stay out of the way, even if it is where you should actually be (and have every right to be there as well).

Though if its a sidewalk with a lot of foot traffic, then just use the damn road.

I hate it when bikers act like theyre pedestrians rather than vehicles.

The other day, I had a green light, and was turning right. A biker was on the sidewalk and heading against traffic, so I had to brake as this guy used the crosswalk coming towards me without stopping.

He coulda been issued a ticket for multiple violations on that one.

(Also, I dont mind when bikers use sidewalks, so long as they yield to pedestrians and they obey the rules when they venture into the roads.)

In the northeast, the roads are super narrow so even if bikes stick to the side of the road, you pretty much have to dip into the opposite lane to pass them safely on like 9 out of 10 roads. Due to our hilly geography and the way the towns/roads are laid out, it's super difficult to drive when bikes are out.

So yeah, fuck bikes. Especially ones that feel entitled to take up the whole road "for their safey", or go on roads they have no business being on (50mph state roads that are technically not highways so they're technically ok to bike on, but clearly not within in the spirit of the law)

Pedestrians will always have the right of way. I prefer them to ride on the sidewalk if it's sparsely used. It's understandable that they would opt to ride on the roads if there's no room to peddle harder.

However, some cyclists are just hellbent on being the most inconsiderate bunch on the road by hogging it, while simultaneously slowing down busy traffic. Share the road? Yeah, you're right. Move the fuck over and let the rest behind you pass.

So should people be required to have a license to walk down roads and streets (including sidewalks where there are traffic control signs)?

VandorLee posted...

The USA just has really bad cycling infrastructure and it's illegal to ride a bicycle on there sidewalk in a lot of towns. If you don't assert your place in the road (by staying left) people will not respect your space and will try to pass you without giving much space and on something like a stroad (a street that is also a road), that could be a death sentence.

In motorcycle classes, they teach you to stay more to the left because staying to the right encourages people to violate your space and riding down the center is dangerous because of all the oil that motor vehicles leak.

If you want to use a vehicle on the roads, it should be registered and insured.

I'm looking at you bicycles and 50cc scooters that decide to cause damage to cars and just ride off because there's a 99% chance they won't be identified and caught because of their lack of id tags.

You're getting doored if you're in the left side of the lane or the middle. Would you rather get doored and hit a stopped car, or would you rather get your handlebar taken out by the door, you go over the bars, and under the tires of the moving car on your left?

Definitely a lot of bad takes in this topic. I in part moved to my current city because cyclists are much more respected here and we have a lot better cycling infrastructure than the rest of the state (you can also mostly ride on sidewalks here too, which is practically illegal everywhere else in the state). That being said, it's still really bad when you compare it to a European city.

i don't hate people on bikes, and i fully respect people on their bikes when i drive. i don't get pissed or anything, in fact i sometimes bike as well.

IMO if there's no bike lane, i think it's fair game to ride on the sidewalk. if there's no bike lane, 99% of the time there's just not enough room for cars AND bikes. on your bike, you have to ride on the side of the road (not even in the car lane like cars do) and you have to dodge parked cars while watching out for traffic behind you. also, making a left turn at an intersection is bullshit on a bike.

the only argument against bikes on the sidewalk is pedestrians that are walking. obviously that shit sucks, but what's the alternative?

There are some people who honestly believe that people should only ride bikes in parks. I've seen such comments on CE in the past.

But as someone who does sometimes ride a bike from work, it's absolutely not safe to ride in certain streets even with bike lanes. And it doesn't help when you have cars parked in those lanes.

Yeah, that part is weird to me also. I've seen people on bikes just blow through stop signs at a 2 way stop (meaning cross traffic does not have a stop sign). I don't know if it's lack of knowledge of the rules, or just reckless abandon, but some of those guys are going to get hit and it's not gonna be pretty.

I'm not anti-bike; I'm anti-asshole. You can't ride your bike on the sidewalk in a business district (ROH 15-18.7), yet people will still do so and act like they have the right of way. But then they'll still go through red lights. It's annoying that a good majority of cyclists only follow the law when it's convenient to them.

If there is a cop on the beat, they will know who you are. If you are a commuter.
Usually, if you're being chill, they won't mess with you, and in fact, look the other way.
They have bigger fish to fry, and of course, they don't need the paperwork for petty shit.
