Can someone please remind me why hockey is so popular in Canada yet they never win?

Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player, That struts and frets his hour upon the stage, And then is heard no more. It is a tale told by an idiot

7 Canadian teams vs 25 American
Canadians make up to about 70% of each team.
American teams have the advantage of lower taxation rates which help in a hard cap and more anonymity for it's players where they don't have as much as pressure from media and fans.

And the Leafs, one of those Canadian teams, are straight up cursed.

A) A lot of the players are Canadian even if they play for US franchises
B) There are 7 Canadian teams and 25 US teams (I realize Seattle and Vegas are recent) so they're against the odds every year. Now granted it is still pretty wild that not a single one has won it all since the Habs in 93 I believe? You'd think one of them would have won by now but they still are against the odds anytime a new season starts.

and about half of that time was under some unfavorable financial conditions. getting the elite euro or american players to play for canadian dollars was definitely an issue, and even the canadian players were getting undervalued offers compared to those from teams in the states.
