I just watched the first one yesterday and thought it was amazing. I love stories involving loyalty to your comrades. I saw the second one today and man some of those scenes were touching!

I'm not even a big fan of the original, but the new one completely blew me away. Perfect balance of character, emotion, action, and intensity.

The ending with Rooster saying "My dad would've done it" certainly hit me in the feels.

Fantastic movie.

I almost teared up when Maverick is on the carrier ship staring out into the ocean and says "Talk to me Goose...", then the higher ranking dude comes up and says "You're where you belong".

I saw this last night. Completely freaking incredible. I re-watched the original a few weeks ago and this was basically the perfect sequel to that, and superior in every way. I earned so much respect for Tom Cruise in this performance because none of it felt overwrought or melodramatic. It all felt like such real emotion from the characters involved. It's astonishing because I absolutely expected it to be over the top with emotions, but it all felt right.

This could have very easily been a disaster that disrespected the character of Maverick quite a bit, but everything about this film was a delight. Just awesome action and it actually kept me guessing on the edge of my seat. So much to be happy with, so many emotions, such raw, awesome action. Absolutely worth going out of your way to watch, and definitely in theaters.

I want another, and hopefully not in another few decades. Tom Cruise pls give this to us.

I haven't seen either, I had no idea the first one was considered anything other than another dumb big budget 80s action movie. So these are, like...real movies?

The first one is a really cheesy 80's action movie that is still tons of fun.

This new one is an all-time best action movie for me. It feels really special.

This is exactly what the original is. Its stills great.

So it sounds like this movie will only have a 33% drop from first to second weekend which is unheard of.

Top Gun 2 and Everything Everywhere All At Once are the two best films I've seen this year by far, and I can't imagine another film topping them except for maybe Nope.

I think this might actually be the case for me too honestly. And I never would have expected either of them to be the best movies I've seen this year either!

I wonder if there's going to be huge pushback from people like me who just assumed it was a big dumb action movie, but who aren't willing to actually give it a watch, ESPECIALLY if people start comparing it EEAAO for movie of the year. I legit thought this was supposed to be a Michael Bay Transformers caliber of movie until this topic.

To be clear, despite being absolutely full of 80s cheese, even the original absolutely shits all over Bayformers.

The original also includes the gayest non-porn scene in cinematic history.

It is on Netflix too.

Just watched EEAAO. My friend highly recommended it and after hearing you guys rave about it, I gave it a watch.

Hated it. Well, I didnt hate it but I didnt like it. I felt it could have been literally an hour shorter. It dragged on way too long and there were so many cheesy scenes.

The best film of the year is almost always something you don't expect until the fall when the later film festivals play their cards.

Top Gun: Maverick tops EEAAO for best movie of the year for me. Like the only negative I could think of is the soundtrack was rather lackluster compared to the original. Everything else it aces.

This felt so keyed on Star Wars (use the force, Rooster!), which itself was obviously inspired by the dogfights of the World Wars so it's only fair for Top Gun to put its stamp on the trench run. It works really well, it's intense. I don't even think the first movie is that solid but this one nailed it
