Disturbing footage recently shared on social media shows a person menacing subway riders, kicking a car window and yanking on a womans hair as she tried to escape while other straphangers avoid the outburst. The roughly two-minute video posted Wednesday on Twitter by Joel Fischer shows a person who appears to be unwell screaming obscenities, before sitting down and grabbing a J Train riders hair as she attempts to move away. Somebody help me, the trapped, anguished woman said softly. Meanwhile, fellow commuters either looked on, moved away from or ignored the pair without coming to her assistance. About 30 seconds later, the emotionally disturbed straphanger shouted, Get up! prompting the unlucky woman targeted by the eruption to stand. The frightening rowdy wearing an ill-fitting white sweatshirt, black pants and grey sneakers then shoved her away before storming off in the opposite direction. Shut the f*** up! the unruly rider then yelled while pacing up and down the train car. This is what I deal with, the man who recorded the incident said to the camera. NYC, demons, you understand? he added, before providing unintelligible commentary on the situation. The video went on to show the unstable person continuing to yell, standing on the subway car seat while repeatedly kicking the window as the train approaches the Delancey Street/Essex Street station.

Commenters on the troubling video lamented that straphangers did not aid the woman who appeared to be randomly targeted by the mentally unwell subway rider. I trust that if I was there, I would [have] done something, tweeted Kenneth Adams. Ive lived in NYC my whole life, what the f*** is going on, real talk?!? NYC!!! We gotta be better!!! You mean to tell me several of yall guys couldnt come together to help that lady???? replied another Twitter user. No one helped ? But this person that films just prayed to a god ? Hows that gonna work, fumed another commenter. Why is no one stepping in[?]

Reminds me of when that woman got raped on a Philly train and no one did anything. I think people just worry the guy has a gun and they die trying to be a hero. Best to leave it to the cops to do something.

This is tragic but this is also completely inevitable. Always carry something for your protection but at the same time weigh out your options as being locked in the subway with nowhere to run or go might be extremely dangerous when retaliating. For example you could use pepper spray on the person but since you're locked in the subway with nowhere to go they might try to assault you with a deadly weapon like a knife or with a gun.

Many times you could be complying hundred percent and they will still stab or shoot you for no reason whatsoever.

Some people with nothing to lose will simply pick their victim and harass/assault/abuse them in any way they feel like. Always be mentally prepared for something like this.

Why does everyone always point fingers that no one helped. If the person is that crazy then who fucking knows what they could have on them. Seen stories of people stepping in to help only to get stabbed/shot afterwards and then die.

that's what some people don't seem to get. there's honestly nothing better to do about it, unless you're willing to expand what people are allowed to do

Yeah. Not every public confrontation will be the same. You can even lose your life in random altercations.

Anything can happen. Anything goes in situations likes this. There are some folks with absolutely nothing to lose and are enraged, waiting to be unleashed by the next person who confronts them. How it happened doesnt matter. All that matters now is this person is a threat to you & the folks around.

Theres no rational way to handle this without suppport. 1v1 aint enough AND theres no guarantee of safety once you confront somebody.

Thats another thing. Fear. You dont know who the person is. Youre about to step into their world and most times, youll be fighting for your life. As You should be. Youre all in now. Its past verbal communication and everything you do or not do is gonna be it

You go hard. Any hesistation and its over. Backing down is no longer an option. You called this person out in front of everybody. Adrenaline kicks in and that person is focused on you. In these things, youre fighting for your life now. the only way it ends is when the other no longer puts up a fight in any way. You stay locked in and engaged. Its not over until you feel the threat has been neutralized. Everybody has their limit and you can never tell who had enough without others.

Its safer to ignore and let others more equipped mentally and prepared physically to handle this situation. Most times authoritative figures will handle these times when help is needed. But if someone publically confronts someone the situation will escalate to where it becomes outta control.

Oh, thats 112% real. You see shit like this all the time on the subway. The correct thing to do is either leave the cab, or put some distance between you and the crazy guy where you always have your eyes and ears on him. Its stressful as fuck, its one of the reasons I got a car.

Cops couldnt even be bothered to patrol the cars for more than a day after the shooting. Were never gonna have more police on the subway, I dont think most non-New Yorkers can wrap their head around how massive the subway system is. At best youll have some police presence in the station, and that doesnt help situations like this at all.

While you do not have an obligation to act, not everyone can live with the guilt from standing idly by in the face of evil. If I had a friend with me then we'd basically be deciding if one goes then the other once things start, or if they'd go high and I'd go low or vice versa.

And if you didn't have a friend? Good chance all these people were just strangers to each other. You might end up having to fight alone

nobody helps because nobody wants to get shot or stabbed or jumped later, it's sad, but you can't afford to take risks. you never know what's going to ignite the situation

Bystander effect. It happens to almost everyone if they are in a crowd. Odds are, not everyone claiming they would have stopped him would have actually done so if there at the time.

80s New York, no question. 90s New York, probably. Today, the odds youll spend more time in jail than the assaulter are high. Like if you pulled a gun with that recording you are absolutely going to jail and the perpetrator can sue you for emotional distress. Thats the world we live in.

Remember, NY is an anti-gun state. So, people with them are scared to respond. This is sad and a result of that logic. Im glad she was ok.

To be honest, documenting the situation and waiting for the transit cops at the next stop (why the assault ended) was likely the correct call since the situation did not escalate. This is also why staying off the subway trains and remote work are a thing.

What she went through was terrifying but to be totally fair it could have gone a lot worse if someone did attack him during that moment. Things went weirdly quiet when her hair was grabbed so the people purposefully avoiding eye contact may not have noticed as well.

It's just an awful situation all round.
