Gamers want to complain about how shit the state of the gaming industry is. People want to complain about microtransactions and that. While those are problems in some ways, they don't even begin to compare. As someone who's been gaming for 31 years, I still have no problem in 2022 finding games that interest me, paying a decent price for them, and getting hundreds of hours of content for my money. I don't need to fall into the microtransaction well with the games I choose to buy, so while it is a problem, it's not one that really bothers me to my core.

However the Photoshop model of computer programs is complete and utter horseshit and I can't believe we as a society are letting this happen. For those who don't know, photoshop is a subscription now, and so many programs are following this model.

You can no longer just pay a flat, maybe expensive price for a premium product. You're forced to pay through the nose every month for the privilege of using their program. And they know you're probably not a professional who uses it every day and the justification of paying for that way makes sense to you, and you get your money's worth. They know you'll pay it, continue to pay it and then use it so sporadically. You're paying $200 a year for something you used maybe 10 times that year.

Complete and utter fucking BS my friends.

The entire Adobe software suite is a subscription package and has been for years. As someone who uses these programs professionally and not just 10 times a year it's honestly pretty great. I have access to any Adobe software i want, any time I want, and everything is always up to date.

I know people don't like the Adobe model but I'm OK with it. I use Acrobat DC daily, Lightroom and Photoshop almost every day, and Premiere Pro weekly. The cloud storage is nice too, I have years worth of photos and videos stored. I get my money's worth from my sub. I'm not even sure how much all those programs would have cost before the Creative Cloud sub model was a thing.

If you're only using the software 10 times a year then buying it outright is a pretty bad deal too. At least with this model you can cancel it when you aren't using it, and pay up for a month when you have a project to put together.

The funny thing is that they genuinely don't give a fuck if you pirate it for personal/educational use

The SaaS model is aimed at milking businesses and outside of using it to make money, most companies give zero fucks about you pirating it to learn it as this increases the likelyhood that companies will use it if people are already trained in it.

It's why Microsoft has free/cheap education versions for schools and universities: so you learn them and employers buy it

Yeah, why pay hundreds of dollars for software you'll rarely use?

Youll own it for life and never have to worry about it again?

I dont need the latest versions of photoshop, and I have no guarantees for someone like myself when Im ever going to use it again. But having it there, always, when I need it is key. And not having to worry about resubbing or cancelling all the time. That would be a major pain in my ass

Butnif you use it professionally and cant even begin to see where Im coming from then this topic aint for you.

Agreed, it's shit. There is no defending it, because they could simply offer both options to customers instead of trashing purchases altogether.
