Or is it over exaggerated? Bought the DE of Mafia 3 and I heard its really repetitive. How bad is the repetitive and is it enjoyable despite that?

It was repetitive enough for me that, despite enjoying the character, story, and setting, I quit after about 20 hours.

The story quests are really fun and you get to fight some annoying enemies. The soundtrack's great, too. The part that failed for me was the stuff in between story missions, where you have to take over territory from generic mafiosos. It's tolerable, but you do it so much, it grinds some of the good times to a halt. (Whistling to lure enemies was stupidly overpowered, too.)

Pure facts.

The game was free on PS+ but even I felt like I was wasting my time rather than that AND my money because of the open world mission structure, which was the same thing over and over in between story cutscenes.

I enjoyed it, I never got tired of taking over territories, and the actual story cutscenes and character interviews are incredibly well written.

This. I didn't mind taking over all the rackets each time either. Sure it's a bit repetitive, but I had fun with the shooting and sneaking around being a badass Nam vet trying to take them over in different ways. I liked sneaking up behind guys unaware, then doing the whistle to get their attention, then bam! They could have done some more work on those and figure some ways to spice them up or have some variety, but I think people are way too hard on that aspect of the game.

The story makes up for it. Even the racist, murderous villain can sometimes be somewhat sympathetic at times. The writing and acting was on point. The soundtrack too. We also need a Donovan game.

Yes, the soundtrack for this game is amazing.

Donovan is definitely one of the coolest side characters ever.

Yeah the repetitive mission structure was really, really bad. I absolutely loved the story and characters. But there were several times where I almost dropped the game out of boredom.

To progress the story, you have to take over a district. To do that you have to attack rackets (basically enemy bases), kill enforcers, stop smuggling rings, etc.

It takes doing like half a dozen of those to make the boss of the district show up, so that you can fight him. Not so bad once or twice, but you have to do the same missions for every district. It gets old fast.

This camera glitch is hella annoying. I can already see the repetitiveness, but so far it isnt bad.

Overall yes.

The Definitive Edition has some pretty good DLC that helps break it up. Hangar 13 has a recommended order to follow that's worth following.

Yeah, I heard the DLC was pretty good, but by the time it was given out free (last year?), I'd already been through it. I'd be interesting to hear how good each is.
