It couldn't have been that long ago because I remember seeing a girl with an all pink backpack and another one with a Pikachu one.

Now all the kids in my neighborhood at the bus stop have clear backpacks on. Wow... so much for backpack manufacturers. They all look cheap and uniform now.

Must've taken a while to get yo SC. I'm glad I got to go to school in the 80s. I always had cool backpacks. My middle school I had one of those nice leather over the shoulder things. Plus we had our PE bags too. All the cook kids had the big Nike and Adidas ones.

Depends on the school. There were some schools starting to do this 20 years ago.

I guess it makes it easy to se everything. I still don't like them, though... Glad I didn't have to use them... Also, they are way too small to fit everything in. And look like they'd break if you put too many books in them...

That was my first thought. Hell, my Chemistry and Biology books along barely left any room. I hated having to go to my locker. It was on the other side of the high school no where near my classes.

Yeah. I had a couple of classes like that where I was basically running to the other side of the school to get to class if I stopped by my locker. So I ended up having to carry a ton of books around. And then, in high school, I had this bus driver who didn't ever really want to wait for kids to get to the bus...

I guess now that most kids get laptops or tablets it is not as big of an issue, but I would have been ripping one of those in half every week trying to fit the 6 text books and 4 notebooks I carried around to every class in highschool.

Wow. I used to have a backpack, a tote bag, and a laptop bag with me to every class. Easier than going to my locker between classes since you had like 2 minutes between classes and lockers were several floors and a city block away. So I just checked my schedule every day and brought every book with me.

I must have been strange, because I never actually put books in my bookbag/backpack. I used it for my notebooks for each class, would go to my locker before first period to get books 1-3, then again after lunch to trade them for books 4-6.

This might explain why my last bookbag, bought in 1994, is still almost entirely intact. Only thing wrong with it is two of the pull tabs on the zippers broke off.

Mine was always filled to the brim and also survived completely intact. It is how you treat it as well.

Edit: I also probably would have gotten into a fight with the school control over those bags, I got an expensive one because of my bad back, ankles, knees, etc. I would not have switched it.

I bought this one from the university shop for $99.99 in like 2000. I mostly use it for laptop or vacations. Held up good for 22 years. It's a lot bigger than it looks, it just is laying flat. It's got 2x the capacity as a normal pack. I got tired of shit not fitting in them. I should dust it off and put it back in the closet so it can get a fresh coating of dust...

I find it surprising how many people's schools forbade backpacks. I was pretty much the equivalent of a Sherpa was all the heavy books and crap I had to carry around, especially since my school didn't have lockers.

Even then, you also have to move the books between school and home at times right?

We weren't allowed to carry backpacks to class in middle school (actually a lot of stuff we weren't allowed to do in middle school...), but we were in high school.

The weirdest thing about my highschool were the lockers. They actually weren't made to hold books and notebooks. They were too thin for that. They were made to hold your jacket and (no joke) a hunting rifle. A lot of kids used to go deer hunting before school so my high school just allowed you to bring the rifle to school after and store it in your locker.

Granted, that policy changed pretty quickly after Columbine.

Yeah we weren't SUPPOSED to carry backpacks to class in middle/high school but I did anyway. The lockers were just a waste of time.

For them people that could use backpacks or didnt have lockers, did you have to carry your books around? Or did they allow you to leave them in class?
