2 reasons

  1. Because they're fun. Duh
  2. Because they're super interesting for tracking information about the game.
Sure it's not 100% accurate due to different systems and people playing offline etc.

But let's say you get super easy "Beat the Tutorial level" and only 87% of players got the achievement. That means 13% of people who downloaded this game didn't even play it.

And you can track this across the whole game if it has frequent achievements for plot sections.

You know the old truism "Only 1 in 5 gamers actually finish a game." well you can actually now get an estimate from any game that has achievements.

And you can often see where they fall off.

If 60% of gamers beat the 3rd boss but then only 32% beat the 4th and only 28% beat the game. That implies that a ton of people playing the game fell of at the 4th boss or some kind of difficulty spike around it.

I find this stuff fascinating because I'm nuts.

I love seeing who beat the game on hard mode and who actually collected the pick ups and shit

There's a point in The Evil Within where your sidekick falls off a bridge and is hanging for his life and there's an achievement for pulling him back up. Only like 12% of gamers did. Which always stuck out to me how most people just let there friend dangle there helplessly while they continue the game

I wouldn't have known that without achievements

And it's pretty much the only thing I remember about that mediocre game

I dunno.

What's fun about a girl's big tiddles?
What's fun about sitting a dark room watching a horror movie?

Our brains don't really think these things through, we just get an animalistic chemical reaction to things.

The "Bing" sound and "you did a good." sets off a dopamine response.

You think WoW would be as popular as it is if it didn't make a pleasant sound when you level up and a bunch of random guys you barely know casually say "gratz" like a bunch of robots?

Yeah, and I've heard devs themselves often use achievements as an easy way to measure stuff like this.

Because the devs want to know how many people are buying the game and actually booting it up and playing it.

They can track that easily looking at achievement metrics.

That's literally the reason "first few minutes" achievements exist.

Cuz we can see them too

And talk about what games we platinumed and shit

I platinumed RE1make.

No idea why anyone on Earth would give a fuck but I did it... Because it was there

This is what Toby Fox was getting at with the Genocide run I think

We as gamers are obsessed with content and completion

ME3 trolled us with this too where there's a limited time where you can try to beat James' pull up record.

It's boring as fuck and there's literally no reason to do it but..... It's thing in a video game... so you do it right?

I mean how many of us who dodged 200 Lightning Bolts actually used Lulu's fucking weapon anyway?

Lulu sucks.

They're just guessing

It's part of the 'conspiracy' against gamers
If people were old enough to remember when achievements were optional for devs they'd remember that some devs literally refused to publish on console because of forced achievements

May be something to do with refunds.

Not sure if it's still the case but IIRC at one point Sony used the fact that you had trophies as evidence that you've put some time into a game so they wouldn't refund you if you asked.

The points you get on the Xbox games are also a very easy way to ask a lot of people to do extra thing without actually giving them an in-game reward so they can kind of distract people from the worsening spoils of their efforts by including lots of freebies and wacky ways of naming each chapter clear instead of "Achievement: Cleared Chapter 5 (Clear chapter 5 on any difficulty)" which nobody bats an eye at.
Also what if your player is terrible at video games but you'd still like to try and get him hooked on the beep sound and seeing the points go up? Freebies.

I don't hate them though. I'll pretty much always run down the achievement list and see which ones I'm up for when I want a game to last longer. Payday 2's achievement list might as well have doubled as its life support for a while. Now it's all about the infamy grinding which isn't as fun.

Variables arent a new system and neither is a simple database, which if it was for metrics, they already have. Researching and utilising achievement platform APIs across multiple platforms is more work

I dont think thats really it. If they didnt care, the game would have like 10 achievements, and theyd be beat chapter 1, beat chapter 2, up until the finale in chapter 10, whered itd be,beat the game.

Taking the time to flesh out 50 trivial achievements is actually showing a great deal of interest in them
