BUT by the same token, yeah, without FAIL people who say "anything but rap and/or country" invariably also do not listen to extreme metal

Why do you think this is the case?

because it usually means they have a very casual approach to music, are not aware of how much "anything but..." covers and basically mean "i don't mind most of what comes on the radio"

Yeah I dunno if that's true.

Like I quite enjoy some extreme metal variants (black metal in particular, but there's a lot of stuff in there I like to some extent) and I say "anything but country" because I've delved into so many music genres.

I feel like people generally say that when they have a diverse taste OR they've been forced to listen to an abundance of the music on the radio (work settings for example) so therefore have some confidence in saying it's all bad.

But yeah I dunno. At minimum I would say there probably isn't a strong correlation

I feel like you hear the "anything but country and rap" line more often in a popular music context just because popular music is what most people are listening to. And maybe I'm wrong but I think it's largely an outdated mindset; I associate it very strongly with backlash by people whose tastes leaned more towards rock music and its derivatives against the decline of rock's pop relevance in the 2000s. That's when rap and hip-hop really started ascending into mainstream status and also you had that "pop country" sound going on. The popular conception of metal back then was nu-metal, and I don't think people are getting really granular about subgenres when they're saying this either.

Anyways this is all to say the music landscape has changed so that even the broad generalizations of genres people are making can be wildly different. There is a ton of variety even within mainstream popular rap, for example, the same is not true for country.

agree with this. i guarantee that if you made this topic on this board in 2004, country would have demolished rap and the topic would have been filled with "RAP ISN'T EVEN MUSIC LOL" and "CAN'T SPELL CRAP WITOUT RAP" posts. that's when i frequently argued with people about rap, which eventually led to me making my "harshrapdebater" alt. nice to see that there's very few of these comments nowadays!

it could also have something to do with the fact that back in 2004, we were a bunch of edgy teens and now we're mostly people in our thirties.

Honest take is probably Rap > Alt Rock > Pop > Classic Rock > Regular Rock > Country

then again its largely cause the regular rock stations play a lot of post grunge

I'm gonna say that I don't think this is right. Usually people who make sweeping generalizations/stereotypes like the one we're discussing don't think logically about it, and there's lots of additional stuff that they would admit they don't listen to if you just asked them about it directly. (Also yes I realize that the sentence I just typed is a stereotype, ironically) People who have a truly diverse taste in many different genres are usually able to better articulate what they do and don't like, and wouldn't boil it down to "anything but" at the risk of misrepresenting their actual preferences.

I never really thought about this statement coming from a "rock" perspective, but that actually makes perfect sense lining up with what was mainstream 20 years ago (at the time when I thought that this saying was more popular) and the types of borderline-mainstream music that would have been opposing it back then. And that also explains why I never considered metal to be one of the "anything but" genres, because it's relatively adjacent to rock.

I mean I'm ABLE to articulate a bit better but I like a lot of stuff and it's cool just letting people play what they like-- you find a lot of cool music that way.

I think it's more to do with personality than how much music they know.

Rap benefits from having a lot of crossover appeal with various genres and styles. For example, anyone here who likes Persona 3's music can say they've enjoyed rap. Country feels more like it's in its own bubble.
