I can only tolerate so much anime shit before it starts to get on my nerves, and these games look anime as fuck.
But from what little I've seen of them, they also look really stylish and have this sort of "cool" factor going on. And I hear the music is good, allegedly. I'm a sucker for a poppin' VG soundtrack

I don't know. On a level of 1-10, how anime are we talking?

About 9/10. Extremely anime but actually have some resemblance to reality so they don't quite hit 10/10.

I don't know about the other games, but Persona 5 has an amazing soundtrack lol.

P5 has an amazing soundtrack, but P3 still is the best in the series for music. The series has a pretty high standard on that front.

P4 does as well, and I haven't played a lot of P3 but the little I have heard is great.

They're a laundry list of anime tropes. They're still fantastic games though.

Try Persona Q2.

The last major Japanese adventure game I played was Nier: Automata and I was able to tolerate that to the end. Would I make it through this?

P3 if you want to feel sad
P4 if you want a cool scooby doo adventure
P5 if you are a weeb
P2 duology if you are based
never played P1

If you do, know going in that these games are heavy on the narrative and really take their time with setting up the plot.

Automata is probably a 7.5 or 8 in this comparison. Super anime but based on stuff from the 90's so it's not really the kind that you are complaining about, and definitely less anime than Persona.

That said I feel like your bigger hurdle will be whether or not you'd be fine with a super long RPG. If you can handle a 100+ hour long play time potential I'd say that you should give P5 a try. Its style will probably win you over far more than the content will push you away.

Is this plot good, iyo? I don't mind a slow burn story if the story that's being told is good enough to keep me sticking around

Ehh, I liked them, but they're not exactly literary wonders. The character interaction is where it's at.

In terms of plot, I think that Persona 4: Golden has the most interesting story. It takes like 2 hours before things get good but thats not really that much time in the grand scheme of things since its a long game. I think its a great entry point and while it has a lot of anime tropes, it doesnt have quite as many as Persona 5.

Persona 5 has the best visuals in the series and from a gameplay perspective its one of the most polished turn based RPGs that Ive ever played. I loved the game but the first 4 hours is kind of just you reading dialogue so Im not sure if youre willing to get through that in order to experience everything that the game has to offer. And like I mentioned before this is an 12/10 when it comes to anime tropes lol. I think its fun but Im not sure how youd feel about it.

Persona 3 has the best music in the series and the coolest main character. It doesnt lean into the anime stuff as much as the other games and the cast is more laidback than the ones in 4 and 5. This probably has the vibe that youd enjoy the most but it has the weakest gameplay out of these 3 games by far and it can get repetitive .

I recommend Persona 4: Golden but the choice is up to you

Nice to hear the other games have great soundtracks too. I've always wanted to play P3 back when I was in high school, but never got the chance. I have P4 on Steam. I need to play that...or finish P5R...or hope P5R comes to PC and then finish it on Steam. >_> I have a higher chance of finishing games if they're on PC lol.

They're very anime. But they're also very good

Persona 5 Royal is the second best game ever made so that's where I would start. If you don't have access to it, then Persona 4 Golden is on steam and is also very good, if a bit less polished

Nier Automata is much more pretentious. Persona games are far less pretentious, but almost every other anime accept is on a much higher level than Nier.

p4 golden is the best game in the series, is on steam and i think costs like 20 bucks

Once this is done, during the protagonist's last day in Tokyo, talking to idol Star Lilina in Akihabara will give him the album with this song. It then can be chosen as a BGM in Thieves Den, after it is purchased for 1 token.

It was an enjoyable game, but the story isn't as good as people try to make it out to be, imo.

Music is good but can you tolerate 100~ hours of listening to the same few tracks?

I haven't played a Persona game either, but I have played SMT ones, even the friggin' MMO when it was still around.

Outside of the social link stuff though, I don't know what else separates Persona from the rest of SMT.

SMT is about questioning morality as it relates to society (it poses it as law versus chaos, but both sides are almost exclusively law with chaos being represented by a new lawful source). Persona, sans P1/2 (they are just budget SMT for the most part), is about questioning society as it relates to the individual/one's role within society.

Persona 4 Golden and Persona 5 Royal are probably the more user friendly Persona games to start with. There's nothing wrong with starting with Persona 3 FES, but it's definitely antiquated at times with the lack of skill selection during fusion, no fast travel, and not being able to control your other party members in battle >_>

Honestly if you can handle that, I would recommend starting with 3 FES so that if you decide to move forward, the QoL features start getting added as you progress. P3 honestly has the best atmosphere out of all the modern Persona games imo

I didn't really have much of a hard time with Nier. There are some anime-y aspects about it, but overall, I'd give it about a 5 or 6 on the weeb meter.
