Explain why not, other than the fact that YOU can't adapt.

They're great for controlling the lights at your house when you're gone.

Why would my lights be on when I'm not home?

If I want the lights on when I get home, I'll just switch them on when I get home.

What the fuck are you even saying, lmao

If I'm not at home, my lights aren't on. When I am, they are. I can physically control the switch when I'm at home. There's zero reason why I would ever need an internet connection to control my lights remotely.

How does any of that say that I don't stay the night anywhere?

Ok, so while it's been amusing watching TC clearly not catch on and others keep stringing him along, I gotta end this chain.

Wifi lightbulbs that can be turned on and off remotely are the modern equivalent of "automatic timers on the lights" from yesteryear. They served the purpose of creating the illusion that somebody is home and thus discourage opportunistic burglars. This concept wasn't just something they made up for Home Alone. Remote access is just a newer take on the same idea, and technically allows for more variation to better simulate a less routine life and make prediction of when you are not at home more difficult.

No, it is not "needed", and it is perfectly fine to be comfortable without this minor attempt at a security measure, most people would likely agree with you that it's not a big concern for them, but it's still a valid reason for some folks to want it.

It's just bizarre. Like all I have to say is exactly what I was saying before, nothing he's accusing me of has anything to do with the functionality of wifi lightbulbs. How is he getting anything out of being this dense, y'know.

But you're right, I should practice what I preach. I always get annoyed when people take SMAL at his word, why should I play along with the webp guy.

Oh yeah, back in the day my parents would leave the lights on. We lived on the edge of a shitty part of town, and they had lived in some real shitholes before moving to this town - one time they got burgled, but the thieves only stole toilet paper. So growing up, they always left the lights on, presumably because of that history of being robbed.

I understand the logic, and if people use wifi lightbulbs for the same purpose, then whatever I guess. Personally, I'm concerned with data collection that comes from connecting your entire home to the internet - Google security cameras, wifi-connected lightbulbs, voice-activated devices like Alexa etc. All of those devices store data and send them off to the companies that produce them. I've also seen someone set up wifi lightbulbs, and it was a pain in the ass just to switch them on without a wifi connection - are your lights just fucked without the internet?

Like idk, it seems mostly pointless to have your lightbulbs - of all of your appliances - be connected to the internet. If you live in a shitty neighbourhood, sure - that's one utility of wifi lightbulbs. I still think wifi lightbulbs are mostly frivolous with a lot of current anti-privacy baggage that big tech has been saddled with, and the comments taking pot shots at me didn't mention burglary as much as they implied I didn't have a life. And shit, if you live in a shitty neighbourhood, wouldn't having $100+ lightbulbs just give thieves even more shit to steal? Hope no-one else in your crime-riddled neighbourhood learns you have a smart home, or they're gonna strip it down into a dumb home quick-smart.

Even seeing that they can be something of a security measure, I still think that of all Smart House-style appliances, lightbulbs are the most frivolous and unnecessary.

I don't use any myself (mostly because I misplace my phone all the damn time..). I know a lot of them are color / brightness change though. I have a dimmer switch for the lights in my basement but everywhere else is on or off, and the only way I'd be able to control brightness levels beyond on/off or removing select bulbs is to have dimmable bulbs with a control source that is separate from the house's wiring.

I mostly just think they're a bit frivolous. There's nothing outright wrong with them, I'm just saying they're a bit silly.

If you're heading somewhere from work, wouldn't your lights already be off?

Or if you're heading out from home, wouldn't you turn the lights out when you leave?

Your point of "what if I'm staying out and I wanna turn off my lights at 5pm?" makes no sense.
