Current Events > Forget Starfield. Why didn't anyone talk about the game, Outer Worlds?!

The game was heavily praised to critical acclaim upon release and lauded for its good RPG elements and all.

Yet there was hardly any talk about it after that... We didn't see any sales figures but I assumed the game only did decently well. It's kind of strange considering that this was made by the same team that did the very successful New Vegas.

What happened? Outer Worlds feels like that one rare polished game that somehow went completely under the radar for no reason at all

It was terrible. Felt like a gutted New Vegas with zero heart or soul.

It's pretty underwhelming. I wouldn't call it bad but I was expecting something on par with New Vegas and left disappointed. It doesn't help that it gets mixed up with Outer Wilds, which people like way more.

Beyond the first area the game felt rushed and short. It's like all their effort went into the first zone.

And yeah, like others said it was New Vegas without the soul.

Well, it's a game where a sequel could have really strong potential.

This was largely my feeling about it. The writing was good, the first planet was good, but it fell off after than. Everything about the game just felt kinda of shallow. The world-building was shallow, the mechanics and weapons felt shallow. It just wasn't super inspired.

And despite everyone hoping for NV 2, the game was more structured like KOTOR but with an FPS combat system.

It felt like a proof of concept. Certain things were incredibly polished, and others were embarrassingly unfinished. Not a bad effort for a small studio on a relatively tiny budget, though.

The lack of depth killed it, though. People don't talk about it because it doesn't have much replayability.

I feel like they had a great foundation and probably wanted it to be bigger than it was, they just didn't have the resources to make it. I do hope they get more for the sequel because the world was interesting.

I greatly enjoyed it.

Sure, it wasn't fantastic but it had fun characters and a story I enjoyed. Definitely could have done with more fleshing out in area's, but I would simply rate it good. Not great/fantastic, but by no means bad.

I agree on this. Expected 4~ areas around the size of the first one. Instead we got a smallish "town" area (the groundbreaker), a tiny area (the one with the toothpaste lab), a massive empty area (monarch) and an unfinished feeling town (the final city place). Even getting away from the later areas feeling less developed, the pacing was just all over the place.

I still quite like it though, especially now that I know what to expect. But when I got to Monarch on that first playthrough, oof. The momentum just grinded to a halt.

I feel like the reviews depended on how much of the game got played. Like if the reviewer wrote their review after only playing the first world, I can totally see how people would be like, this game is incredible. If they wrote it after the full thing, less so.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

They banked heavily on the Fallout 76/Bethesda hate train and the developer's own history making Fallouts in the advertising of this game which a lot of people latched onto.

I always see people justify the game's underwhelminginity with "ah well it's just a small budget, shouldn't have expected something massive and ambitious!". The game isn't underwhelming because of the small scope. It's because 80% of the game is like an empty fake movie set town. Also the levelling system is pretty lame. Was never excited to pick a perk.

Edgewater and the groundbreaker are excellent. Then the game just kinda doesn't bother after that. Fizzles out.

Get real.

The game was coming out at the peak of the Fallout 76 hate train. People just wanted to be like, "Yeah, see Bethesda? Thats how you REALLY do it!" as they pointed at this steaming pile of shit.

Id argue with the other posts in this thread and say there wasn't ANYTHING done well in this game. First time Ive ever felt so negatively about a video game.

It was..... okay.

Had fun moments, but you couldn't definitely feel the constraints on the game, and it never felt wholly open world versus just having large levels.

This they got lucky since fallout 76 is getting bad pr and capitalize on it. They even got tim cain and Leonard boyarski but failed to make even half the game new vegas (and the original two fallouts) was

Its level up system was extremely novel and was one of the better ones in an RPG. In that sense if it was put in a better game I could see it being extremely fun, doubly so if they take it a step further in its complexity.
