It's Godsmack, Breaking Benjamin, 30 Seconds to Mars, Creed, Nickleback, Staind, etc.

I have only ever heard this term used to describe Crush 40.

Butt Rock goes back to the 80s. It was the big hair bands with tight pants that were often artistically lacking. Warrant and Poison being like the quintessential butt rock bands. These bands were often more popular with women than the bands they tried to emulate.

Or another way to put it, if you were a 90s kid, you barely experienced butt rock.

That has it's own name though. That was "Hair Metal". No one called it Butt Rock back then.

And has sadly become the new "Dad Rock" genre.

That's the stuff the 40-60 year olds listen to when they want to relive their youth, like their Dad's did while listening to The Eagles, Tom Petty, Rolling Stones, Steely Dan, etc.

Not saying you're wrong, at all, but just in the minority, as most people hear GnR, Motley Crue, Poison, etc and think "Hair Metal" or "Glam Rock" as the counterbalance to "real" Metal bands like Metallica, Anthrax, Megadeath, etc.

So it looks like butt rock has had two eras.

With the definition being

"butt-rock is just the stupidest, basic, three-chord rock that you can possibly play."

There's a very small window in the 90's where mainstream, radio, rock music WASN'T butt rock.

I always thought it referred to a loud generic sound that you heard a lot in the later 00s especially.

From what I remember, if nothing else, Nickelback we're at least a competent copy of Nirvana's vibe and style early on in their career. From the 2000's onwards they got worse and worse until they acsended to legendary memehood.

Puddle Of Mudd had literally one good song. One. It was featured in an old WWE game on the PS2, that's the only place I heard it. Don't remember what it was called, don't remember the game, don't care enough to look it up. Everything else I've heard from them is unlistenable trash.

And that sums up my thoughts on post-grunge. I'm a big sucker for mid to late 90's and 2000's nostalgia but if there's one thing from that era I wouldn't miss, it's post-grunge.

That's only because over the years metal heads and rockers have softened on the original butt rock. Butt rock has always been a derogatory term, and there's fewer and fewer rockers that outright hate Poison or Skid Row like they did in 1990. People hated it then like people hate mumble rappers now. Yes, it is popular but the people that have been into it for a long time hate it.

Whatever it was defined as before, I am declaring that butt rock now refers to any rock music that incorporates fart sounds.

Butt rock these days is defined as like hard rock around the late 90s up to the 2000s. So like bands like Staind, Godsmack, Shinedown, basically bands you say headlining rock festivals in red states like Florida or Ohio or Oklahoma etc. Stuff that gets played regularly on XM Octane.

I think it is more generally applied to anything that generic rock that stations across the US play over and over. So it can definitely encompass 70s and 80s bands. "The station where we play nothing butt-rock"

And the answer is obviously Five Finger Death Punch.
