Not sure if right place to talk Touhou. Is anyone fans of the Touhou Project game series The music is really good. I like fanworks. Games, music, art good.

I like it. I'm not very good at the games though. Even easy mode is difficult for me.

yeah that's the one I'm best at. I can make it I think 2 spell cards into the extra boss.

DDC is my favorite though. Favorite music track and favorite character are both from that one. Stage 5 theme and Seija (her theme is quite good too). I love how much of a troll she is and how her trolling goes meta by trolling the player/fanbase. I'd probably pick the seasons game for my #2. I feel like it's the most consistent in pretty much every way.

After like 14 years the premier Touhou game downloading site finally got taken down by DMCAs. It's much harder to recommend newcomers to it now. I guess it's to be expected now that most games are on Steam but I don't know if it's worth simply checking them out for $14 since the games are pretty short and the high difficulty isn't for everyone. The games also have no English localization and the site had the English fan translation patch pre-packaged.

The 11 year old site with fangames on it too is still fine.

There's a local arcade (Arcade Monsters) with a ton of rhythm games that have touhou songs.

Yuuhei Satellite senya have lot of rhythm songs. Some Touhou, some beatmania. senya well known for Touhou fan anime opening.

My best feat was a Subterranean Animism Hard 1cc. Unless there are extra stages considered tougher because I ran through a bunch of them too. Not incredible on the whole but I was really happy with it.
I'm torn on what game I like best. I had the most fun with 8, 11 and 12. Imperishable Night had the comfy vibes down, it's probably that one. The Marisa/Alice rapid fire trick is great.

I used to have a few playlists on Youtube where I'd obsessively collect up every arrangement I liked of individual songs. I stopped a few years ago though because the flow of new ones slowed too much and I guess I lost the enthusiasm.

Not bad at all for 5 bucks.

You know what's too rare? Loose Rain (Or however they're going to translate it, it's the game that bought us Faily Wars after all) arranges. The extra stage's theme from GFW. I like that song and it made an impression on me because of how aggressively difficult it is compared to the mainline games' extra stages. I never actually beat it before my interests went somewhere else in the end. It definitely has the mysterious path and the dim rainy day feel down with a bit of the 'in over your head' feel when it picks up.

It would be nice if it got more appreciation.

So do you guys actually play the Shmups or are you just in the general fandom area? I'm just curious because I know at some point the floodgates were opened (Undertale probably did it, maybe a youtuber or two contributed) and a new wave of fans poured in who mostly stuck to associating Touhou with every other forced meme going and either didn't go near the games or quit fast.

My favorite on the whole was probably 8 but 10, 11 and 12 are great. 15 was the most recent one I played and that was around where I decided I wasn't feeling it as much anymore.

I was first exposed through mcroll memes like 15 years ago, got curious about the music and got into it then (12 in demo mode was the most recent release at the time) and after listening to more music, I started watching playthroughs of the games but eventually played most of them myself. I am not good at them though lol.

I've been kinda itching to replay some games, but I'm too lazy to remap keys since my laptop won't accept shift+Z+X being pressed all at once. RIP deathbombing.

I probably had a pretty unique start to the series, compared to other people. I was big into Twinkle Star Sprites back in the day, then heard of PoFV/Touhou 9 being like that, and so I tried the demo. Didn't know it was a full-blown series until some time later when I started checking out the doujin game scene, then I got into PCB/7, IN/8, and EoSD/6 in that order. Conquered Extra mode in all of those (I remember Phantasm took me nine months of on/off playing) and a few hard modes here and there, but I could never really 1cc the later games much. SA/11 in particular took a long time just to clear normal, and that was probably the last one I did.

I guess I should throw mine out there since I'm asking. I first saw it in the mid to late 00s too but didn't really care. It was the sort of thing that'd find its way in if you watched fan animations, music or fangames of old franchises. One minute you're watching Mega Man or IWBTG then youtube starts finding ways to insert Marisa stole the precious thing or Ronald Mcdonald into the suggestions.
A few years later I was bored and very disappointed with the direction late 7th gen games were going so I gave the franchise a look and ended up finding a lot of what I liked. Rewarding gameplay, challenge, that satisfaction that comes from having something memorising, characters that were vague enough to let you interpret things how you wanted, lots of good music.
I was able to get normal 1ccs after a little while and beat most the extra stages (never had the interest to persist with 13's or 14's and GFW was straight up really hard.) I managed to 1cc 8, 10 and 11 on hard mode. I was really happy with the 11 1cc because that game's pretty daunting. Never finished grinding the 12 hard mode 1cc. Occasionally I feel tempted to pick a game and throw myself at lunatic difficulty.

Imperishable Night has to be the comfiest one though. Lots of character choices to further adjust your difficulty or keep it interesting, two final bosses, I really like the slow bullets but more bullets on the whole thing it does instead of just firing random shots really fast. Old World, Masterspark, Dream Battle, Cinderalla Cage, History Of The Moon, Lunatic Princess, Extend Ash and Reach For The Moon Immortal Smoke are a lot of pretty great songs in quick succession.

I play shmups from time to time (have several of the Touhou games and other shmups in my Steam library), but I'm pretty bad at them
