Resetting your userbase? What kind of dumb gimmick are they doing now? Make a video game console, nintendo, you aren't going to revolutionize VIDEOGAEM, shut up and make zelda games.

Nintendo's always been about this "we're always innovating!" mentality so they don't give a crap about releasing consoles in the same manner you'd expect from Sony or Microsoft with their consoles.

And yes Nintendo are insanely stupid for it, but the damn company's run by most of its old guard still. I wonder if anything would fundamentally change once Miyamoto and all the other oldfarts still there finally croak.

I mean the user base is always going to reset since well you know? The whole new console will have brand new games and what not to purchase and it has been a large part if all systems?

Literally just make another switch but better.

Yes. Resetting the user base in this context literally means making a new console and developing exclusives for that console.

Sony and MS mitigated this by making almost no games exclusive to their next gen console for several years. Nintendo may very well do the same.

Nintendo was trying to be innovative with the Gamecube. The pressure sensitive shoulder buttons, and the way it emphasised the A button over the others. Also the sticks being so clearly different to each other. They also had plans for it to support 3D TVs and motion controls.

Switch is still selling like hotcakes doe. If they mde a new console they wouldn't get the chips. Maybe make a switch pro?

But the fact is years later or not the user base is going to be reset regardless.

Yes that's true.

I think they mean resetting as in concerned for the next console with backwards compatibility.

Switch is basically a phone. Just steal the phone business model of incremental updates.
They even already did this with Gameboy.

This. I bet they are apprehensive about adding Switch backwards compatability to the new console because they don't want people to buy old cheaper Switch games instead of new ones, and they want to sell enhanced ports of Switch games that'll probably get ported to the new console. If the new console does have Switch backwards compatability more people who are collectors would be more likely to buy it so they could net a lot of sales just based on that. I hope they make the right choice and add it and aren't anticonsumer about it.

That's a good point too. I hope they don't split them because collecting games for two Nintendo consoles(Home and portable) is going to be pricey and annoying.

I would hope theyd be able to tell that releasing a system that couldnt play DVDs when DVDs absolutely were taking off was a major factor.

well tbf, i do believe the Switch is gonna be a tough act to follow... lol

Even the 3DS had adoption issues early on. I'm going to guess they're going to do a Switch 2 because they're setting up their subscription service, which I assume they'll want to work across multiple consoles. I figure that now new console gimmicks can be included in the detachable controllers, or with peripherals like Labo.

This is really all they need to do, much like how Wii U just needed to be WiiHD.
Fall back on the GBC model, where the new one plays the old games, and maybe even the old one playing new games.

There's no way a sane Nintendo would just "console over!" a system that's sold 100m+ and still has huge momentum.

Soo much this.

They struck gold with the Switch design. That coupled with the SD card games, why change that? You can fit a STUPID amount of data on ONE SD card and its read speeds trounce read speeds of disks. Upgrade the hardware occasionally and run with this for awhile. A long while. The Switch is damn near the perfect console.

Cartridges that can provide 4K resolution would be insanely expensive and you would need a different type of media device. Which means you would need blu rays with 4k capability. Which means you would need a disc drive which isnt going to be ideal if not a bad idea that would be constantly breaking because moving parts and handhelds dont tend to mix well.

No. That isn't true. The 4k capability isn't at all related to the disc media involved... How do you think this technology works?

Its been their most loved hardware in a long time, and its not like Sony or MS is going to steal its gimmick of being able to switch from handheld to stationary anytime soon.

so lets meet in the middle and do 720p/1080p handheld and 4k docked. The dock could have hardware to boost games to true 4k on big screen.

A d those would be upscales of more simple games but at the end of the day there are other aspects of games and the system itself that would still make it impractical. Fuck pretty sure the Steam Deck doesnt even do 4K resolution.
