I honestly could be remembering it wrong, but I believe the prophecy and Dumbedore's knowledge gave him advanced notice on Voldielock's plans, including the destruction involved.

Harry's parents were sacrificed to draw him into attacking Harry and destroying himself, temporarily or otherwise.

And if his plans were to sacrifice them he wouldn't have gone through all that effort to protect them and offer to be the secret keeper.

Well that's a bit different because Lily and James didn't have to die to defeat Voldemort, Harry did.

But wasn't the whole reason for Harry needing to die is because he became a horcrux due to Lily's sacrifice causing Voldemort's spell to rebound?

I don't think Dumbledore thought he was gonna mark Harry as his equal with a Sharpie or anything, collateral damage was expected.

But I think at this point it's just a disagreement regarding characterization, and I'll admit to being cynical as fuck when it comes to giving Dumbledore the benefit of doubt.
