Used to work as Asset Protection at Best Buy. You're not allowed to touch, but you can still block their path. You have to be very careful though because some people will try to force their way through at which point you'd have to let them go.

Best Buy was very strict about employees not putting themselves in dangerous situations like that.

Don't risk your health for your job. Especially for product that is insured anyways.

Ran into this exact situation when some guy tried to run out with a bunch of video games. I was able to block him for a little bit but when it became clear the guy was gonna try to force his way through I had to let him out

Depends on the company to set their policies. And even then its up to each individual store. I worked at a place where managers could tackle shoplifters and put in em cuffs. In fact they even looked forward to it. "oh man! I just hope a ******* tries something stupid today!!!" I transferred to a different store, same company, and there was a strict no contact policy.

I worked security at BB with a guy that didn't give a shit. We watched a dude snip off a $2000 camera and stick it in his coat. Security friend tackled the shit out of him on the way out and held him down while I called the police. This was like 15 years ago though.

Probably because our dumbass managers will tell us to simply "show good customer service" in order to just make thieves aware that we're onto them. But it's fucking stupid, even our loss prevention guys can't touch them if they're walking right out the door.

The point is, if companies are going to tell their frontline employees not to physically engage with thieves, then they need to employ people who CAN. Fuck these damn people who think they can sue a store for being touched when THEY'RE the ones committing a crime.

I caught someone shoplifting at a store I worked at several times. Once I was watching her because I knew she was a shoplifter and she called me a racist. Except everyone knew she was a shoplifter. She had even been kicked out multiple times but kept coming back when she knew new people were working who didn't recognize her.
