He is not a WHITE man. Oh lord now.
The Quartering ,Geeks and Gamers , Nerdoric are going to have months of high views complaining about a show that most of their fans base don't watch.

How can a body changer not always change into a white man. I mean any other thing can be different about him. Height, weight , and even personality. Here is the chart that they should have checked before getting a new Doctor.

RTD is coming back, replacing Chibnall as showrunner.

Personally I never thought he was a very good writer either, but he was excellent at handling the press, drumming up publicity etc., and he actually managed to get the show out on a consistent schedule, so if nothing else I imagine they hype and viewership for the show will dramatically improve.

The recent special set of episodes was pretty great. Really proof that they just need to allow themselves time in the storylines. Idk why they wanted storylines contained within a single episode.

Hopefully the new season rolls with that.

With RTD back, the quality of the writing should go back up (especially for monster of the week episodes that he exceled at). However, so too will the number of deus ex machinas.

Given that Chibnall's biggest claim to success prior to Who was Broadchurch, I'm surprised they didn't go with the "one story over six episodes" season structure sooner. It's literally what the guy is famous for doing well, and the jump in quality between his first two seasons and Flux was insane. Too little too late in terms of the audience that was lost, like, but at least he and Jodie got to show that they can do good Doctor Who before they went.

has the more recent stuff actually been good? i stopped watching after the reveal of the doctor being that child that was sent back in time and was experimented on so the galifrayans could get regeneration. seemed dumb and it should have been the master, since it would fit in with their madness

The usual pondscum in the press may make the odd comments about "the Beeb being woke", but I don't think it will be as loud as some people may expect.

I mean, it would always have been a vocal minority who cared about that sort of thing in the first place, but Jo Martin and Sacha Dhawan being pretty much universally considered to be the best things about the Chibnall era will likely have silenced even some of the dickhead crowd.

I think they did that because that's just the streaming trend now, since it keeps people coming back weekly. Also seems easier for the writers.

But it's a bad format imo. As we just saw with Picard, and with several of the MCU shows, season long plots are basically movie sized plots stretched thin with filler between 6-10 episodes.

I think I prefer Doctor Who's self-contained monster of the week nature with the occasional two-parters.

Flux worked out great, but only as a one time thing. It was also only 6 episodes compared to the usual 10.

The Doctor is one of the few fictional characters with in-lore justification for changing literally any conceivable aspect of the character on a semi-regular basis.

What was the grifters' justification for hating on the female doctor? I never really followed Dr Who. >_>

Flux, the six-parter, was legitimately excellent. Like, "one of the best seasons since the show came back in 2005" levels of excellent. I massively recommend it. Eve of the Daleks was the best New Year's special of the Chibnall era - admittedly not necessarily a compliment since the other two were shite - and was a fun, standalone romp. It had Aisling Bea in it as the main guest star, which helped, because it's impossible not to love her in things.

The Easter special with the Sea Devils was crap, though. But it was very close to not being crap, I think. I got the impression that it wasn't until after filming that they were told they only had a standard 50 minute slot rather than the usual hour that specials get, because every fault with the episode was down to editing, like great chunks of exposition, character development and plot development seemed to just be... not there, with people appearing places or getting out of sticky situations without explanation. I reckon if it had been ten minutes longer it would at least been a fun, if forgettable, episode.

I'm an old school Doctor Who fan, having time lords change their gender does raise a lot of questions from the classic show and doesn't make a lot of sense based on what we know of their species. But even the classic show threw out continuity when it suited them, so it wasn't completely unheard of.

I brought up Picard because me and him both just finished watching the finale like 2 days ago and he's been talking about the issues with the season in other threads.

Also, I was talking about "now", as in the past year or two during the pandemic and not every serialized show ever. Which is why I also brought up the MCU.

Yeah, I don't think the Picard comparison was a bad one to bring up to be honest - when the two longest running sci-fi franchises in the world both turn to a serialised format at the same sort of time, it's definitely fair to directly compare the two.

And I do think that Picard didn't do a great job of it over ten episodes. My main complaint with S2 of Picard was that episodes 3-8 could easily have been condensed into two episodes.
