Man I don't remember this but I don't think it was that good. It definitely has style, but not quite codified into the DMC3 vibe the franchise is known for. 1 leans into some actual serious story stuff but delivered in that bad 2000 way.

I SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE ONE TO FILL YOUR DARK SOUL WITH LIIIIIIIGHT! The main story of DMC1 is defined solely by its self-serious melodrama. The dialogue and voice acting (one plus is this game is SO. DAMN. QUOTABLE.) over-exaggerate a pretty bare-bones plot all things considered. Dante and Trish don't interact enough to make her pretty obvious twist compelling, Dante's past familial issues are briefly brushed up against but never really expanded on, and the villain crew are fun and bring a lot of personality to the game but don't offer much depth beyond that.

What I really love however are the lore and background of Mallet Island - some of my favorite parts of DMC1 are reading the flavor text especially in the earlier areas, the little history notes like "The columns twisted and the statue of a god disappeared", or about crops growing out of season and castellans administering barbaric punishments on their denizens. I don't know, it's tiny but helps bring the setting and tone alive for me, much more than the actual story does, bringing in some creepy Eldritch horror to fill in some blanks.

I'd like to give this game a higher score in the story since it's one of my favorite games ever but I really can't justify it!

It's got its cool moments and Dante is great of course but the series hadn't really found its footing yet in terms of tone. Too much serious not enough silly.

Only played a few hours of this, so I won't rate it.

Beat it 3x but all I remember is Dante being cool and the tragedy of being unable to fill Trish's dark soul with LIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT.
