My Baked Alaska attempt. Not bad, but I had a power outage, so the ice cream melted a little bit and my meringue didn't burn correctly.

NOOOOOO
I really should see if I can get a new whisk for my stand mixer. I broke my hand one trying to make this.

Was gonna say it looked a little flat & the top wasnt fully caramelized before reading but putting everything into account not a bad effort at all - have a feeling youll churn out a truly triumphant-looking one after another attempt or two.

Hope Im no longer sick by Sunday (and still have my sense of smell + taste) so I can visit my dads house for dinner, bought a new power cord for his smoker & he was gonna make a chicken + air fryer broccoli while I made the other sides.

Well Im pretty much fine now but he tested for COVID a while after I did & hes still not feeling too hot still gonna do dinner but the smoked chickens gonna wait a bit - thinking about making some kebabs tonight. Still gonna make the 3 sides I was planning, idk if the broccolis still gonna happen or not.

anyone have any idea what these are?

https://i.imgur.com/yDi1fyw.jpg

they were in the produce box from the local farming co-op foodbank. i tried googling some stuff, and i think they might be either turnips, rutabagas, or gigantic beets of some kind, though they are not quite typical color for any of those.

thanks! that's one of the things i came across online that i thought it might be. i think this confirms it. looks like they should be good. this one article about them says they taste similar to red beets but don't have the staining effect, which makes them better for combining with other veggies.

sounds like they should go good as part of the next batch of pan-roasted vegetable medley i'm gonna do, which might be tomorrow if we polish off the last of the previous batch today. i have some baby red potatoes, a bag of brussels sprouts, some onion, garlic, sweet potato. might pick up a couple other things for it, too.

From personal experience Id say golden ones have a sweeter & milder flavor than red ones - both have their advantages.

Medley sounds hella good but Id try to keep one leftover & make a beet salad with it if youve never made one before - the usual build for a beet salad is beets + arugula + goat cheese + honey vinaigrette & often nuts like walnuts/pecans/pistachios too. For best visual presentation pick up a red one too, the red + gold contrast does wonders:

^i think i ran across that exact picture when i was googling around for stuff about golden beets. it's looks great, but honestly i'm not a big salad kind of guy. and i don't have goat cheese or arugula, lol. i suppose i could substitute lettuce and feta cheese, cuz that's what i got, but yeah, it probably wouldn't be that great. i love roasted veggies too, i can't get enough of them tbh, with garlic and rosemary and parsley and stuff, it's one of my favorite things to do with veggies ever, so it tickles me to be able to add another veggie to that that i've never done before.

lol i know what you mean

growing up, my mom would never even roll out the dough or use a cutter or anything, she would just do "drop biscuits", where you literally just drop the dough by spoonfuls onto the baking sheet, lol. ended up with some weird shapes. i eventually got her to try rolling them out and getting a biscuit cutter, and that's how i prefer to do it myself, but yeah, you still get some odd shaped ones. especially the last one you have to make by mashing together all of the in-between cut-out pieces.

Cant comment on from scratch but they have instant curry the same way they have instant noodles - you just get a little saute on the meat/veggies, add in a block of the instant curry & some water, get the curry dissolved & bring the pot to a boil, then let it simmer until done. Golden Curry & Vermont Curry are the ones your local grocery might have in stock, and they have instructions on the back for the recommended vegetables/meat, portion sizes, more detailed cooking instructions etc. Typically the usual Japanese curry consists of meat/tofu + onion + carrot + potato but mushrooms & cauliflower also work well in the mix.

nice! i love lentils, whether it's stew or soup, lol! actually i just finished up the last of the 15 bean soup that i had in the freezer, and i want to make either more of that or some lentil stew soon. possibly both.

tonight though, it's more buffalo chicken sandwiches and pan-roasted vegetable medley. the latter is in the last 10 minutes in the oven right now. those golden beets look like they are gonna be really good.

no, but i'm Italian. when we do pasta, we do hearty, homemade marinara sauce, big meatballs, multiple kinds of macaroni, garlic bread, and sometimes something like fried zucchini or eggplant or mozzarella sticks, so it's always a feast. it's one of the things i tend to overeat the most when i have it.

There are peppers, onions, and carrots in the mix you can't really see in the picture. But perhaps I should spice it up a bit more. I don't think I used enough of the spice rub.

Cute. Probably tasty too v hard to pair hard pretzels w/ a sweet creamy solid coating and not have it taste amazing. arguably the biggest indictment of modern American consumerism is how Chex Mix pretzels dunked in Hersheys chocolate is probably the nastiest pairing of these two realistically imaginable

mixing Pasta sauces.

This is something new I am trying and I am getting a lot of nice flavors from it. I am just mixing store bought pasta sauce. (wow I talk about Pasta a lot) . Anywho I found that making it was too time consuming for the flavor it gave me. So what I am doing now is just getting differnt types from the store and mixing them and it has been turning out wonderful.

also i didn't get a pic but yesterday morning i did some scrambled eggs with the first bellpepper from the backyard garden this season. i did em Denver-style, almost, except for with turkey bacon instead of ham, and then the onion and bellpepper and cheddar cheese. i like to call it the "Don't tell Denver it's not ham" scramble.

Sweet spread, really like the look of those chicken thighs in the front left

I havent been cooking much lately. Went on a trip to visit family and then had family staying a few weeks and so weve been eating out a lot.

Today I made roasted chicken and tzatziki. My daughter tried tzatziki at a wedding we went to the other day and loved it. She usually can be a pit picky and eats little meat but mixing the chicken with tzatziki was a real hit, she ate her whole plate for once.

I basted the chicken in butter, lemon, garlic, thyme, white wine, salt and pepper. Stuffed it with lemons, onion, thyme and garlic. The skin was perfectly crispy.

I made tzatziki the traditional way with Greek yogurt, grated English cucumbers, lemon, garlic, dill, olive oil, salt and white pepper. I used to make a mint version so Ill probably try that next and see how she likes it.

Didnt get to take pics at first (hungry baby was hungry) but leftover tzatziki:
