Yeah, the stuff with him as a kid was sloppy as fuck and kind of out of nowhere. Not sure where they're trying to go with that.

Baltar kind of saved that episode. It was nice seeing James Callis again and I did like the twist that he was Picard's father.

This week's episode was better in some ways, but not by much.

The bigger problem is that the crew is rarely together this season. I want some good Seven and Picard scenes like last season.

Lower Decks is good. Even if it's satirical, they still "get" Star Trek, why can't the main series?
People loved The Good Place. People like The Orville. Just give us our 40 minute little morality plays in a universe full of wonder and rudimentary space politics. We don't need big budget explosions and universe ending catastrophes.

i gave up on the live action star trek shows after discovery s3 and picard s1. it just seems like they have no idea how to write at all and just throw things together without thinking them through. major grin on youtube has a bunch of clips where the poor writing shows they haven't watched trek before. not to mention that the crews don't seem to act like starfleet officers at all, compared to the ones we've seen before. they're more childish and speak more child-like than people who have been through the academy

I think Discovery would have fared a little better if it started off more like a traditional Trek series. Show us what the universe is like now. Introduce and develop the characters. Build up to this conflict with the Klingons. I can't deny that the special effects were impressive, but they mean nothing to me when I have no interest in the story or any of the characters.

I thought this week's episode was good tbf. It feels like things are moving forward again and there's a pace and a drive that's been missing for the last few weeks prior. You can see the pieces actually clicking into place for the endgame now rather than everything just stagnating while the characters split up and meander around the past not really doing anything.

The first few episodes of the season were excellent - probably the best two episodes of NuTrek in general - but it all went to shit when they came to 2024. It's like they knew how they wanted the season to start, knew how they wanted it to end, but didn't really know what to do in-between. So they settled for not really doing anything.

I can forgive some of the decisions they've made on the basis of Covid - presumably while they were mapping out the season they thought that filming location work in present day LA was less of a logistical nightmare than lots of small, cramped sets and SFX shots while dealing with social distancing, work from home and so on, and I'm guessing that Elnor being hugely sidelined and Isa Briones not really having any scenes with the rest of the main cast was due to difficulties with the actors travelling. You have to make allowances for things like that.

But at the same time, those same restrictions meant that they had much longer than initially intended to write the scripts for the season, so surely they could have used that extra time to come up with a proper middle as well as the beginning and the end. And if they couldn't, then they should have bit the bullet and made the season 6 episodes instead of ten.

The only people I have seen complain about Lower Decks are people complaining that the lead female is a Mary Sue which she is not 100% not. She literally gets thrown in to jail all the time. got beat up by her own computer clone, is wrong a lot, and even got stabbed in the by her commanding officer.

But I love the show it is fun. The crew care about each other. It seems that new Trek forget about the show is about people.

Probably not. Even excluding Discovery and Picard there's a lot of legitimately bad episodes in the franchise. Monsters was just meh, and James Callis alone elevates it a notch or two.

She doesn't fill every bubble, but she does get a lot of slack that any other character wouldn't, is repeatedly "the chosen one," makes connections with characters she shouldn't even have access to, et cetera. Michael certainly feels like Wesley taken just a step further, who was already almost literally a Mary Sue.

Here's the original Mary Sue story:
"Gee, golly, gosh, gloriosky," thought Mary Sue as she stepped on the bridge of the Enterprise. "Here I am, the youngest lieutenant in the fleetonly fifteen and a half years old." Captain Kirk came up to her. "Oh, Lieutenant, I love you madly. Will you come to bed with me?"

"Captain! I am not that kind of girl!"

"You're right, and I respect you for it. Here, take over the ship for a minute while I go get some coffee for us."

Mr. Spock came onto the bridge. "What are you doing in the command seat, Lieutenant?"

"The Captain told me to."

"Flawlessly logical. I admire your mind."

Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, Dr. McCoy and Mr. Scott beamed down with Lt. Mary Sue to Rigel XXXVII. They were attacked by green androids and thrown into prison. In a moment of weakness Lt. Mary Sue revealed to Mr. Spock that she too was half Vulcan. Recovering quickly, she sprung the lock with her hairpin and they all got away back to the ship.

But back on board, Dr. McCoy and Lt. Mary Sue found out that the men who had beamed down were seriously stricken by the jumping cold robbies, Mary Sue less so. While the four officers languished in Sick Bay, Lt. Mary Sue ran the ship, and ran it so well she received the Nobel Peace Prize, the Vulcan Order of Gallantry and the Tralfamadorian Order of Good Guyhood.

However the disease finally got to her and she fell fatally ill. In the Sick Bay as she breathed her last, she was surrounded by Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, Dr. McCoy, and Mr. Scott, all weeping unashamedly at the loss of her beautiful youth and youthful beauty, intelligence, capability and all around niceness. Even to this day her birthday is a national holiday on the Enterprise.

My brain has already tried suppressing it from memory. But from what I remember, Picard is unconscious and tells a childrens story to some guy acting like his psychologist, who ends up being his dad.

The rest of the crew are up to nonsensical shenanigans.
