So something occured to me while I was going to bed

Witches have something called a grief seed, while magical girls have a soul gem. When Sayaka lost her soul gem, her body died. Surely her soul (gem) would also have been affected. We may not have seen it because Homura retrieved it quickly, but I'm willing to bet that had she not done so, her soul gem would have turned into a grief seed and a witch would have arisen from it.

Witches will be revealed as the souls of magical girls who went too far from their body imo

Kyubey doesn't lie when he says magical girls are in conflict with each other almost all the time.

I'm generally wary of good series over extending themselves, but everyone I've talked to about this has told me to watch the movie, so I will. It probably won't be until next week though, I need tomorrow to prepare for a job interview on Monday

This show is a masterpiece.

There's so much I really liked about it. I liked how despite Madoka being the title character, she was an observer until the very end. At the same time, the whole plot revolved around her and she was a bona fide participant in other timelines. Speaking of which, you have to salute Homura. I like it when characters go back in time again and again in order to change something and Homura's a trooper along with the best of them (looking at you, Okabe). All the characters were fun, even those I didn't initially like (Kyoko). The music was really good and the creative use of OPs/EDs was inspired. The pacing was really good; the first almost-three episodes being a bit less harrowing was necessary to set the tone: you have to set something up before you can deconstruct it.

I wish I'd been able to watch it weekly; I think the wait between episodes would have made for a better experience. Further, seeing everyone else's reactions and coming up with theories would have been really fun.

I know I praised the ending, but thinking about it I'm not 100% satisfied. It's not necessarily bad, but it's a bit too happy an ending? I would have preferred something a bit darker. Hopefully the movie can deliver on that front.

That's all that comes to mind right now; if anyone wants my thoughts on a specific topic feel free to ask! And finally, thanks @Calwings for bringing it up in the topic, which was the trigger for me watching it. I'm glad I got to experience this show

Yeah, you definitely need to watch rebellion.

Also, on the subject of music I want to make sure that the composer Yuki Kajiura gets proper credit because she is absolutely brilliant. She's up there with yoko kanno in terms of knowing that if she is involved in the series the soundtrack is going to be amazing.

Is the movie dubbed? I can find a subbed movie called rebellion and a dubbed movie called "Hangyaku no Monogatari"

There is definitely an official dub for the movie, but that second title you mentioned is not it.

Edit: actually, just doing a quick Google it looks like that is the Japanese name for the movie. I was confusing it with another series with a similar name.

No problem, I'm glad to help and glad you enjoyed it so much. Hopefully you also enjoy Rebellion and then the long painful wait for the next movie. There's also the Magia Record spin-off to check out, but unfortunately, only the first of the two seasons has been dubbed so far.

Pretty good rankings, though I'd personally have Kyoko at the bottom. I know she softened up as the show went on, but I didn't grow to like her quite as much as other people did. I do agree that none of them are bad characters though.

I think my favorite thing about the series is how off and wrong it feels during the early parts, even while it's running down the laundry list of magical girl tropes.

It took me a couple of watches to figure out why, but I think the biggest thing is that almost every scene is shot either slightly off center or at a weird angle. It's such a wonderfully subtle way to make you uncomfortable without tipping its hand about what's coming.

A masterpiece indeed.
