Specifically because I wanted to post some underrated personal favorites.

This is a song I listen to pretty much any time I get shitfaced with one of my drinking buddies. It's by an Australian band called BAD//DREEMS - same dude introduced me to Pup and The Bennies.

I've spoken about Maria Mena before in the same breath as Rachael Yamagata - two very underrated women in the music scene who are some of my favorite musicians, period. I've been going back to an album called Cause and Effect which focuses heavily on familial trauma and the aftereffects of it, with particular focus on the singer's struggle with eating disorders.

I've tended to avoid this album because of how twee the song All This Time (Pick-Me-Up Song) is - despite introducing me to the artist - and because of how much I dislike her cover of I Was Made for Loving You. But this song, Where Were You, is a strong contender for one of her best songs. Definitely a little overwrought, but it's the exact mood it had to hit and it's fantastic.

I've posted this before, but From TG&Y is the definitive song about hating where you're from and feeling like you're going to die before you get out of that shithole, and being acutely aware of how everything about your life is stripping you apart one layer at a time until there's nothing left.

This song took ages to grow on me. It's an Elton John song from Too Low for Zero (I'm Still Standing, Cold as Christmas, I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues), and it's sung in a really jarring falsetto.

Like you hear the first note, and it might make you cringe. I'd hear "You say you wanna grow up / and look like Robert Mitchum" and it'd inspire this sort of revulsion at the sound of it, or I'd laugh. Because Elton John is really trying on this song. It's an artistic choice that he has to push himself to accomplish, and I think it's very polarising. My guess is that he's singing from the perspective of a woman, possibly the subject's mother.

So why am I posting about it?

It's a heartbreaking song about a deceased man, taken before his time. It's from the perspective of someone who knew him as a child, and there's high drama with lines like "we argued once, he knocked me down / and he cried when he thought he'd hurt me". And the chorus on this song, the words being sung even if you dislike the way they sound, are really fucking sad.

"And there's one more arrow
flying through the air
One more arrow landing in a shady spot somewhere
Where the days and night blend into one
And he can always feel the sun
Though the soft, brown earth that holds him
Forever always young"
